Yep, MyGirlsMom first hinted at a problem with the spelling in the title. Then I reinforced it with my post...see #17 in this thread. But I can't see where the OP has ever returned here to comment or correct. Oh well.

Where I live most folks say their uncles are married to 'ants.' When I was in high school I was having a conversation with a little girl, shopping with her mom. She kept talking about her uncles. "Uncle Dave did so-and-so...Uncle Matt so-and-so." I asked, "Do you have any aunts?" She thought for a couple seconds and replied, "Mom says we have ants in the dog dish."

Aunt= Ant.
Vase= Vayse, not Vaahse

Aren't these words pronounced differently depending on various areas of the country? I was born in upstate NY and then moved south as a child w/ all my family...aunts, uncles, cousins, etc. I was always exposed to a northern accent until 1st grade...no public kindergarten down here in the 50's. So even though I was raised in the south, I still have a distinct northern accent that is obvious w/ words like chocolate & coffee. I always have to explain where I was born & got my accent when I say I grew up in the south.

Nope, it's route (ow) for a road and ruuuut for something that grows in the ground. I've never heard route (ow) pronounced "root." It may be that "root" is a regional thing. I live in the midwest.

"Hey, we ain't a talkin' bout spellin' h-yar! We'se jawing bout how we tawk."
Funny when I think back "warsh" was common where I came from, like "far" for fire, "seen" for saw, and "bar" for bear. "At thar" for "that there" (doubly wrong) and a lot of people say "do(long o)g for "dog." My parents didn't talk like that, or most people I was raised around, but it was pretty common way out in the country, where plumbing was uncommon.
It was more common in very old people, and not as much in the generation who had been raised with radio, and even less so in my tv generation. And people who had lived elsewhere and a lot of people who were in WWII didn't talk like that. I think a lot of that dissolved pretty much in the war years.
