I would pronounce them both as rout', rhymes with shout.

It can be pronounced both ways according to M-W...I almost always say "r-out."  The umlaut (two dots above vowel) indicates an ooooo sound...Lou, do, who.

And I say "b-air."  The only time I ever hear it pronounced "bar" is in the South.  "They's bars in them thar hills!"

I say rout and root...I guess I can't decide which way to pronounce it.  

@Oznell Whenever I say roof or root beer (like your husband does) people ask me where I am from.  (Chicagoan now living on east coast )

Chiming in from CT here.  I would pronounce both of them "root."  And yes, I say "ahnt."

What @Preds said!  And I am from all over.  lol    Roots are something that grow in the ground.  A route rhymes with shout.   And my uncles' spouses are "ants".  lol

LOL!  I'm from the midwest originally.  My dad said root for route and ruff for roof.

My mom said warsh and they were both from the same general area in Central IL.
