Hi Ladies. I am desperate. I have been looking for a new job since Oct 6 since I am so miserable at my current job. They treat me so poorly. Anyway, can you please give me any tips for my resume and cover letter? I am looking for work in the not-for-profit sector. Anything you can contribute will be appreciated. TIA

I don't know anything about looking for a job (haven't worked in 42 years) but I do know one thing, if you want a job you have to make yourself stand out from the others.

 

My daughters have gotten some amazing jobs by simply going back and thanking those that interview them.

 

After they do the interview my girls would send out an email thanking them for taking the time to interview them and saying a little something to remind them of who you are.

 

There are so many people who are looking for the same jobs you need to make yourself stand out.  During the interview process say something that you can use when you send the email back out thanking them for the interview.

 

My late husband owned many businesses that grew quite large.  He used to agree things like that made a difference.

 

My son-in-law owns over 64 Dunkin' Donuts.  He'd say the same thing.

Try Indeed and Linkedin if it's safe for you to be public with your job search. Meaning you won't get fired for looking.

 

Monster was pretty useless and there can be creepers on Linkedin so be cautious about posting a photo or responding to those you don't know.

 

I got a second pre-paid cell phone and used that for my search. If someone called on that line I knew it was a potential employer. Costs only a few bucks at WM. Also, use a professional sounding but disposible email.

Yeah Annabellethecat I always send a thank you note. YOu know what is enraging to me? And I'm not exaggerating; it enrages me. When companies do not even bother to let you know that the position has been offered to someone else. Please, please, please spend 15 seconds and send an email letting me know.

I have a better idea.   Make contact with your local workforce center and sign yourself up for a job search workshop.   They'll help with your resumes cover and thank-you letters,  usually have free printing services,  help with interview techniques and problems and give you great tips on finding the "hidden job market".   All services are free of course.   Make contact by checking the government pages of the phone book.   Also don't forget America's Job Bank which is a nationwide listing of available openings, also free.
