That was my first thought that the other swimmer may have egged him on prior to the race.  We especially do not know what goes on away from the cameras.  The competition must be intense for swimming the way we have seen it in figure skating several decades ago.  Now that was unsportsmanlike like conduct.  An iron pipe and a knee.

No one is offended.  Disliking his behavior and being offended are two different things.  He came across as looking foolish.  That's his problem, not mine.

I didn't have a problem with any of Phelps' reactions.  Much of it was in response to Le Clos'  taunting which has been ongoing for years and has been especially blatant during those Olympics (for example, standing a few feet in front of Phelps' before the race and doing a boxing routine). The "number one" thing was done by Le Clos last Olympics when he beat Phelps. I think Phelps reaction after last night's relay was because even he was surprised he pulled it off.  He was clearly spent, having raced about an hour before the relay.  I think he went into the relay wondering if he'd have enough left, and his reaction was one of surprise and glee that he did. To those who treat him respectfully, he responds in kind.  To those who throw it in his face, he throws it right back. Fair enough, IMO.

Michael was focusing and listening to supportinve and encouraging words.  He noticed the opponent teasing him but he knows what he is capable of doing - WINNING!

For the record, my comments were specific to his behavior in the pool immediately after winning.  

I didn't see the fake boxing thing or the death stare he responded with.  I'm more concerned with not gloating after winning.  The other shenanigans didn't interest me.
