@gmkb @SaRina @faeriemoon...I couldn't agree with you more...I was turned off also by Michael Phelps cocky and arrogant behavior last night, as well as his scowling face under his hoodie Monday night before the semi-final swim...He is representing the USA at the Olympics and his behavior exhibited very poor sportsmanship...It took the excitement out of his Win.

As someone who has played sports and coached I was a little dismayed by his cocky attitude but in the heat of the moment he was celebrating defeating his opponent so who am I to judge? . So much build up to this race and to his medal count I may not agree but I certainly understand.

As well as hope the SA swimmer at his young age understands that when you poke a giant bear you will get hurt. As one of the commentators said last night. Phelps has done so much for the sport of swimming and he may not always seem gracious to some but he is amazing.

So proud of him and all the US swimmers!

He's an amazing swimmer, the likes of which we will never see again in our lifetimes.

I was, however, also turned off by his number one finger thing and motioning to the crowd to give it up for him. He just didn't need to do that. His accomplishments speak for themselves.

I didn't mind, though, that he was smiling and laughing during the National Anthem. That was no biggie to me. I just thought he was brimming over with joy. Well deserved!!!

We would expect the American press to lionize Michael Phelps, and to minimize anything negative, of course. But the British press, often not exactly kind to America or Americans about many things, had the above to say about him. Not one word of judgment about his actions before or after the win, which is pretty amazing from the press of a country where self-effacement and modesty is paramount. They just gave credit where it was due.
