If you read the second article, you can see the architectural rendering of the completed home. Both articles said there are a mix of home styles in the area. They are not all Victorian homes. I don't know how an ornate Italian mansion fits into the mix of home styles.

I know what you mean. Not to be unkind or snobbish, but the neighborhood doesn't really look like anything all that special, does it?

Even more reason this odd house stands out as not like the others.

Re: Not in My Neighborhood???

You really don't want to mess with Historic District neighborhoods and go out on a limb without ALL of the appropriate approvals and NO appeals or challenges whatsoever.

No where does it state that this couple was told by the city to "go ahead." They knew there was an appeal filed. Regardless of whether someone tried to casually dismiss it as "just "procedural," you have to be pretty bold to ignore ANY filed appeal and go ahead with your plans. You don't do it with HOAs, and you REALLY don't do it with Historic Districts until you receive full written final approval and any and all appeals have been addressed and taken care of.

Sorry, I don't think they have a legal foot to stand on. Too bad they made assumptions from what incomplete information they were told.

It doesn't really appear to ""stand out"" to me based on the last pic...

I don't think the modern home sticks out anymore than a few of the others - from what I could see.

I think the green house across the street is garish.

I LOVE the color of the green house! It's a beautiful shade.

Re: Not in My Neighborhood???

The man is an architect and surely knows about procedures and that appeals are not insignificant. He thought that once the house was built there wouldn't be anything that could be done about it. What other reason could he have had for rushing into construction?

I agree.

I agree too. At first, I expected to see an entire neighborhood of Victorian style homes. Not the case here. Most of the "architecture" seems more late 20th century style bungalow. Am I missing something?

Re: Not in My Neighborhood???

Growing up, I lived in a neighborhood where every house had a different theme: Tudor, Japanese, Modern, Mid-Century, Farmhouse. They were all mis-matched but that's what made the neighborhood interesting and beautiful. Years later, the homes are worth millions of dollars and the nabe has been written up in various magazines. My point is I'd much rather live in that kind of neighborhood than a cookie cutter neighborhood.

This new construction sits practically on the road. I would think there are guidelines how far back a house must sit.

We lived for many years in a historic area. Truthfully, I'd rather have a well maintained contemporary home as opposed to a historic home in disrepair or a vacant lot on my neighborhood. Our historic commission was ridiculous with their guidelines.

the other houses look to be the same way as well.

Most really old homes actually were built very close to the roads. I guess that was considered a good thing back then. I live in a 100 + year old home and neighborhood. Many of the houses are painfully close to the road. Luckily, ours is set back some.

Re: Not in My Neighborhood???

I think the outside of the home looks pretty normal and not much different from the other houses in the area. None of them looks to be anything special, in any obvious historic way.

If they were all totally cookie cutter, then his would stand out; but they're not, they're in different styles, so there's room for one more different style. I don't think the outside is extreme, but he could tone down the windows if he were willing to compromise.

I think the inside is utterly hideous and someone is trying too hard to be "modern". It looks more 1960s retro, than contemporary, to me.
