Re: Not in My Neighborhood???

First of all, building or renovating within a historic district takes a lot of patience.

However, you can't build a new authentic period home, but you can build a reproducton. They don't want reproductions because they devalue the authentic homes (according to the article.) So the only other option is to not build at all. {#emotions_dlg.blink}

Seems there should have been more thought put into allowing them to build in the first place. Exactly what are they supposed to build now?

I don't think the modern home sticks out anymore than a few of the others - from what I could see.

I think the green house across the street is garish.

Re: Not in My Neighborhood???

The fact that a neighbor filed an appeal should have told them that their house and them would be unwelcome in that neighborhood. If one neighbor went to the trouble of appealing there would be many more who would also object. That should have been enough for them to reconsider the design or the neighborhood.

I don't find anything attractive about the house, the roof looks like it's squashing the second floor, the brick columns and surrounding wall looks like an after thought because there is no brick anywhere else on the house. The windows on the second floor look like replacement windows people put in because they are cheaper than replacing the originals.

As for the sherbet green, that may be the color of other homes in the neighborhood.

I agree.

Re: Not in My Neighborhood???

This new construction sits practically on the road. I would think there are guidelines how far back a house must sit.

We lived for many years in a historic area. Truthfully, I'd rather have a well maintained contemporary home as opposed to a historic home in disrepair or a vacant lot on my neighborhood. Our historic commission was ridiculous with their guidelines.

If you read the second article, you can see the architectural rendering of the completed home. Both articles said there are a mix of home styles in the area. They are not all Victorian homes. I don't know how an ornate Italian mansion fits into the mix of home styles.

I know what you mean. Not to be unkind or snobbish, but the neighborhood doesn't really look like anything all that special, does it?

Re: Not in My Neighborhood???

The houses appear very close to one another. They don't sit that far back off the street. Must be some reason he's building there...
