The planning department or commission can make the owners change certain designs or size, depending on what was spelled out in the original approval. That's quite common in the Bay Area, I don't know about the area under discussion.
But yes, they can demand changes under some circumstances.

I don't think it is a ugly house at all, it just looks weird in that neighborhood. If I had that house I wouldn't want it in that place. There are plenty of lovely neighborhoods in Raleigh that have all different kinds of looks.
As for not wanting to live in a town that is evil and unethical, this stuff happens all the time in towns all across the US. Hardly anything new or only specific to Raleigh.
I am fairly certain they will side with the new homeowners.
If so, hopefully these new homeowners won't have a desire to be "friends" with any of their neighbors.

i don't find the people who live their to be evil at all.
i do question the motives of the new home builders other than making a name for themselves.
there are many places to have built their dream house and not in a historically known area.

Yes, these people chose specifically to live in this neighborhood because of its history. I can understand why they would be upset.
I do wonder why the new home builders would want to live there too because the rest of the neighborhood kind of looks like a little village you would see in a book illustration.
Time will tell.

Especially when their attitude seems to be that the neighborhood "should" welcome change and "move forward" and not "remain stuck in the past."
I can't imagine these comments are endearing them to their neighbors.

That is what I really don't understand. There are many cute neighborhoods in Raleigh that are very eclectic so why not pick one of those. This one is definitely not (at least style wise).

That should have been the end of the story. I don't care if the neighbors are "up in arms" or not. Their problem isn't with the home builders, it's with the board or commission that approved the plans. No, once a town approves something, they can't unapprove it. Especially after construction has begun. Whatever. I'm sure it will be decided by the courts. But that's NOT the type of town I would want to live in. Evil, unethical people.
If you read the article, it says that a few days after the plans were approved, the neighbor filed an appeal. An appeal means that the decision can be overturned. It is a safeguard in case the original board makes a mistake. The homeowners should have known this, yet they decided to proceed with construction.
They were foolish and now it may cost them.

This is really an ugly home, IMO.

The article says he has designed other homes in the neighborhood.
I don't really think it looks all that different.

The timeline said they started building in Oct and she filed an appeal in February.
Maybe I read wrong.
