Re: Nordstrom's Announcement

Nordstrom originated in my city. I love the store, its treatment of customers, and now its decision to put up decorations AFTER thanksgiving. Macy's here has had their Christmas department open since before Halloween. Ridiculous. Next they'll be setting up before Labor Day. Kudos to Nordstrom!!!

Probably not.

It's up to individual customers as to whether they want to use their holiday to shop at home. Do you actually think an order placed on their website on Thanksgiving will be completely processed TG night?

Re: Nordstrom's Announcement

It seems like an odd thing to announce yet it seems to have touched a nerve.

I'm astonished people have such strong feelings about store decorations.  I never even notice.  I couldn't tell you when any of the stores in my area decorate.  Or even if they decorate.

Our town has some beautiful decorations and I look forward to those. The resorts are gorgeous at Christmastime.

Stores though?  Are they really that special?

Yes!  I completely agree.  When I was growing up, Christmas season started the day after Thanksgiving and that's how I've observed them in my home ever since.  I can't stand it when retailers rush the holidays.  It's a real turnoff to see Christmas candy in the stores before Halloween, LOL.

If I had to wait until after Thanksgiving to be in the Christmas season, I'd simply miss it.  I feel like every year even though I start pretty early I just put the stuff up and take it down and it's gone.   I am less inclined to do it every year.

I think for this day and age it is an outmoded policy to wait until after Thanksgiving.  LOTS of us do not "do" Thanksgiving.  If you work, you don't have enough time in three weeks to enjoy Christmas if you celebrate that.  To me, why not put up the Christmas/Holiday decorations a week before Thanksgiving and kick off the party--for whatever you celebrate!

Lights, cameras, action!  Thanksgiving is a big meal, if anything--so let's start the real party early!  To me, Halloween is the Fall celebration and then "Christmas' starts Thanksgiving week anyway now.

I totally disagree with this and actually find it pretty sad that Thanksgiving is so overlooked and that you consider Christmas to be the real party.

Just like some people don't celebrate Thanksgiving, some people don't celebrate Christmas.  Some people celebrate both and would like to treasure each holiday as it comes and not mix them together.

Thanksgiving happens to be my favorite holiday of the year.  It isn't only about a big meal.  It's about spending time with my family. There is no hustle and bustle to Thanksgiving.  No making sure your house is decorated and that you've picked out the perfect presents.  It's just a time to enjoy being together.  Most people get more time off at Thanksgiving than they do at Christmas which is why it's the most traveled holiday of the year.  I know more people who travel to be with family for Thanksgiving than any other holiday, including Christmas.

I work a full-time job and I have plenty of time to enjoy the Christmas season AFTER Thanksgiving.  I don't put a stitch of Christmas decorations up until after Thanksgiving.  I buy nary a gift until after Thanksgiving.

There are people who work on all holidays.  You celebrate when you can.  No reason just to skip it or gloss over it.

I am delighted for you.  That used to be my Thanksgiving experience.  As the child of older parents, all my family are dead, so there is no family gathering.  Most of my cousins are dead since they were much older.

A lot of people for a LOT of reasons DON'T have a big warm fuzzy gathering.  I'm not complaining, but the two of us cooked a turkey a couple of years and it was stupid.  It was worse than just treating it like another day.  So to us, bring on the Christmas season.  Don't please try to shame me for that--it's just the way life is for some of us.

They won't have displays/wreaths, but will they still have holiday themed items? (ornaments, socks etc.) Some people like to buy this stuff early.

@missy1 many of the holdiay items they are selling are already out in stores or on their website.

I hear you.

My mother passed away in December of 2000. My dad is 88. I am an only child. Once my dad is gone, I will have NO family to celebrate T-day or x-mas with.

Sad?

Yes, it is, but it is also a fact of life.

Re: Nordstrom's Announcement

[ Edited ]

Maybe this sounds cynical, so I need to think more about it.  It just seems logical if a company is a "for-profit business," all decisions are aimed toward making the most money in the long run.  Even their charitable efforts, or the publicity they issue about holiday decisions, all tie back into that bottom line, profitability (and image = profitability).

I think that's why I try very hard not to make judgment calls about the ethics of businesses, and I seldom post on the topic, unless it's about known abusive practices toward employees or something of that nature.

Working in IT, and in medical centers, I do know what it's like to be the person who needs to either be there or be on-call on days when others have time with their loved ones.  I think that helped me to choose to decide that the genuine joy and abundance of any holiday -- or "holy-day" in whatever way we personally interpret some of them -- is in our hearts, in our own, specific, interaction with the people who mean the most to us.  It seems to me praising or condemning businesses is a wee bit futile and it surprises me to see the debates about it taking up so much time on social media.

Re: Nordstrom's Announcement

They have always done this. What many DON'T know is that employees are required to come in Thanksgiving NIGHT to assist in setting up these decorations.

I love Nordstrom; but.... I also am very aware of what goes on behind the scenes and do make it a wonderful experience for the customer means the employees are the ones often paying the price.

All this said: I  applaud the store for doing this and remember when other companies did also; sadly, it's a race to see who can set up holiday candy, wrappings, etc the soonest. I don't want to see Christmas items in August, thank you. Bleh.
