Well...just like dieting, I can't just eliminate something cold turkey.

I try cutting it in half FIRST....then half again and then I can pretty much stop.

I was successful last year cutting my buying in half and this year so far so good...

Re: No buy year

[ Edited ]

I buy what I need so my purchases are minimal. Groceries, gas, home maintenance, insurances, utilities, property taxes, prescriptions, church, haircuts, and a few gifts are my main expenditures. I am retired and no longer travel. With inflation and the current economy I will continue to not spend.

Has anyone done a successful no buy year?  This year I'm not buying any new clothes, shoes or jewelry.  I retired last fall and I have more clothes than I could ever wear.  I've already given much away but I still don't think I need any of the above.

Has anyone done this?  What did you not buy?

I try to make thoughful purchases, so to say I'm not going to buy anything for a year just adds stress and guilt that I really don't need.

No, not something that I would think about doing. Whether for needs or wants, not practical for me.

I think I do okay as far as not buying too much of anything really. Things break, stuff wears out and frankly I get bored with some of it, too. So I go out and buy something new to take care of it. I don't buy stuff 'just because'. I buy stuff to replenish and renew.

This is my goal. I recognized my wants were far greater than my needs, so on January 1, I resolved to rein it in by not purchasing clothes/shoes.  I have done well with a very few exceptions. The wire on my favorite Natori bra starting poking through the fabric so I replaced it. Then, all of a sudden my thick waffle weave pj top started making me itch, so I replaced that top with a very soft one. I am proud I am doing so well.

Of concern is what we are spending on groceries. I swear we pay more than other parts of the country. So I started keeping a record of what we spend. I am not willing to change where I shop or the meals we eat, but I am doing it more for awareness at this point.

I stopped working by choice about five years ago.  The job was going to kill me.  A couple years ago I stopped buying so much fashion.  I will replace my shoes as needed.  A bad back and two spinal fusion surgeries taught me it really is all connected.

I am trying to cut back, but I always seem to be able to justify that clothing or jewelry purchase. I had not bought any jewelry from QVC for a long time. But I recently got a diamonique pendant on a chain. It was so dang chintzy that I sent it back. No more QVC jewelry for me once again. My closet is 95% QVC clothing. Some I have had for a long time and gotten my money’s worth. Some I hardly ever wear. A few things I have never worn. I have a pile of clothes now that I need to donate. I don’t spend a dime on manicures, pedicures, massages or facials. I go th the hairdresser like twice a year. I don’t have expensive hobbies. Those thought go thru my head when I buy clothing I don’t really need.
