Newborn in London Tests Positive for COVID-19

(I thought I had read that some preliminary studies in China said the virus was not transmissible to the placenta.  Perhaps the infection occurred immediately after emergence from the womb.  The poor mother and infant.)

A newborn baby has tested positive for coronavirus in what is thought to be the youngest case of the disease in the UK, it has emerged.

The child’s mother, who was taken to a north London hospital days before the birth with suspected pneumonia, has also caught the virus.

The mother tested positive at North Middlesex hospital, in Enfield, with results coming through after the birth. The baby was tested for Covid-19 minutes after being born.

It is not known whether the child contracted the disease in the womb or was infected during birth. The Sun, which first revealed the case, reported that the baby was still being treated at the hospital but the mother has been transferred to a specialist infections hospital.

In a statement, North Middlesex university hospital NHS trust said: “Two patients at North Middlesex university hospital have tested positive for coronavirus. One has been transferred to a specialist centre and one is being treated in an isolation room.

“The safety of our patients and staff is our top priority, so in following guidance from Public Health England, we are regularly deep cleaning the areas where the patients are cared for and staff who were in close contact with these patients were advised to self-isolate.”

Prof Chris Whitty, England’s chief medical officer, has said previously that pregnant women should not start worrying about coronavirus. The government says there is no clinical evidence so far to indicate that the virus can be transmitted via breast milk.

That poor mother...can you imagine giving birth and having pneumonia at the same time?

Sure hope she and her little one can pull through with no problems.

@golding76   I am not sure all these tests are going to be correct.  If you recall the sed rate was to see if women were pregnant and now it is used for inflammation.  Strep cultures and flu cultures are not totally accurate.  I think news should quit sensationalizing these tests.  Scrue the news.

Re: Newborn in London Tests Positive for COVID-19

since this started in China did they have any cases or children that got the virus? They have the info but why aren't they passing so we know what to prepare for.  I think they should tell us how many are sick with the virus instead of the test results. My understanding is if you test positive you could be a carrier but not get sick. Many years ago I lost my baby because I got the Swine Flu and they never said that could happen but I was really sick with that Flu.

This is awful, very sad. Hoping Mom and baby will be ok.

@Nonametoday, do you know the percentage of Covid-19 tests that come back with an false result?

My thought is that it is very low. I hope that most people trust the news on how many people test positive and how many deaths occur. That is is the best way to ensure that people not be complacent about this health crisis and that they take every recommended precaution for themselves and FOR OTHERS.
