No, that wasn't my conscious intent.  Just posting a hypothesis as to why the OG's local (if he/she resides in San Francisco) Target stores might be closing earlier than normal.  Reports of rampant shoplifting in San Francisco have been in the national news recently.

I saw something about this on the news a couple weeks ago.  It seems in SanFrancisco they aren't going to prosecute for anything under $1,000.  Also, they aren't going to stop people for expired license plates or burned out head lights.  They don't have enough officers to handle all the mayhem.  It sounds like the inmates are running things.

Yeah, but this has been the law since at least 2016 (shoplifting of under 1,000 will be consider a misdemeanor and not grand larceny.  So it's not new according to a local news report.

Oh, I agree about the lunacy.  Just want to be clear that such lunacy is not new.  This thread makes it sound like Proposition 47 is the cause for the problem "new."  Perspective is all.  I like to put things in their proper context @tends2dogs .  No offense to you.

The Fred Meyer where I shop has two different doors in the front since it's such a large parking lot. Well I noticed today they had a sign up and said only one door will be open after 8 pm every night. I just assumed this was because of shop lifting and they can monitor people coming and going better. I feel bad for the stores as this is just another thing they have to deal with.

San Francisco Targets Closing Early Due to Rise in Thefts

Target stores in San Francisco are now closing early due to theft concerns.

At least five Target locations in the city are shutting their doors at 6 p.m. instead of 10 p.m. The company said the early closures were prompted by an alarming rise in thefts over the past month.

Target isn't the only store facing the problem. Walgreens and CVS in San Francisco are also reporting an uptick in thefts.

A Target spokesperson released the following statement to NBC Bay Area on Friday night.

“For more than a month, we’ve been experiencing a significant and alarming rise in theft and security incidents at our San Francisco stores, similar to reports from other retailers in the area. Target is engaging local law enforcement, elected officials and community partners to address our concerns. With the safety of our guests, team members and communities as our top priority, we’ve temporarily reduced our operating hours in six San Francisco stores.”

 I have heard that this goes the same for security guards at the bank ATM's, they don't even carry guns, when they see anything suspicous going on they have a direct line to the law enforcements in the area to alert and take action.

The law is not new, but the push to keep police from intervening is new.

In a previous post I mentioned I have a friend who has been a police officer in our major city for over 20 years. He said that in the past year their hands have become completely tied.  Police used to drive around and monitor neighborhoods, essentially looking for anything that might be crime.  Now my friend will sit behind a library or store and wait until he's notified to respond to a call. This is why property crimes and car thefts have skyrocketed in our area.  They can't do anything either about shoplifiting. I don't blame stores for closing early.

Thankfully there have been no incidents in my city at Target......But as others have said, I dont know what it is about Walmart plenty of crime and incidents at these stores---from theft, assaults etc. no matter what type of neighborhood environment....

Caught on Camera: San Francisco Neiman Marcus hit by handbag thieves, SFPD looking for suspects

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- Police are investigating a case of shoplifting at Neiman Marcus in San Francisco.

Video obtained by ABC7 shows suspects running out of the department store with designer handbags.

Police say the incident happened Monday at 5:49 p.m. near closing time, at the store located at 150 Stockton Street in Union Square. Witnesses told police several suspects entered the store, grabbed merchandise and fled the scene in multiple cars.

Ten can be seen running out.  No arrests were made

When prosecutors refuse to charge those who steal from the stores, what recourse do stores have.  Walgreens is closing stores in San Francisco because of high theft.  Apparently Target is closing stores early in hopes of reducing theft.  Then the public complains when they have no where in the neighborhood to shop.

I read an entire story about it a couple days ago.  Target and some Walgreens in San Francisco are doing it.

The stated reason was too much theft.  There are different degrees of store security, and if unarmed, what can they do if someone is bent on stealing?  Not worth their lives.

There were a couple videos of it being done in the article I read.

I am in the Chicago area, and I no longer feel safe shopping at night.  Used to do it all the time.
