If you (and your son) have been happy with State Farm, you may want to talk to other State Farm agents, if you haven't already.  This may be a company policy now, or it may be the agent.

We had a similar situation--for years had a great agent.  He retired and the guy we got saddled with was uninformed, uninterested and never available by phone or in his office.  He finally quit and the agent(s) we have now are wonderful.  Not only is someone always in the office to speak with, they have explained my policies to me and given me an idea of what is happening in the insurance industry now.  I'm very happy with them.

Good luck!

You are SO RIGHT!

My husband talked to a State Farm Agent an hour ago. The agency is 1 mile from our house. The guy answered all my husband's questions. My husband was so impressed with the office. There were 5 employees working. The agency we are presently saddled with has 2 part time empoyees.

We are on the move.

@drizzellla Thats terrible!  I would ask what is going on and maybe look around for new insurance if they don't give a satifactory answer.

I've been using Allstate since we've been living here and never had that sort of issue.

I don't get why people just don't make a call to their agents.  SF agents are independently owned but they have to follow company guideines.

@drizzellla You say your son has been with SF for 20 years but the insurance is NOT in his name so *technically* he hasn't been with them for 20 years.

Do I understand this correctly? If he wants it in his name he has to get a credit check. Is there some reason he won't or doesn't want to?

His insurance on his original car that was totaled was in his name.

The insurance on my former car is still in my name. And State Farm would not change the name to his until we did a credit check on my son.

My husband is of the opinion that if State Farm wants a credit check, they are welcome to do it. He can't believe that State Farm does not have a Dun & Bradstreet account ot something similar to check up on people. But the agent refuses to do it. She said we have to. My husband dealt with credit checks all the time with his work.

He has no idea what State Farm is chceking. So why should we have to pay $50-several hundred dollars and then not have the information State Farm wanted.

Here is the credit check information for free:

  • Everyone in the U.S. can get a free credit report each week from all three national credit bureaus (Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion) at AnnualCreditReport.com.
  • Everyone in the U.S. can get six free credit reports per year through 2026 by visiting the Equifax website or by calling 1-866-349-5191.
  • Under the Fair Credit Reporting Act, you are entitled to a free annual credit report each year from each of the three major consumer credit bureaus. To request a free copy of your credit reports from Equifax, Experian and TransUnion, visit the official site, annualcreditreport.com.

Re: New Procedures for Car Insurance?

@drizzellla.  Why don't you tell your son to shop for and buy his own insurance independently?  It would be good experience for him.

I wonder if insurance companies are thinking a good credit rating equates to a solid, responsible, careful driver?  Not necessarily true of course but they could easily be thinking this way.

And I have always thought that insurance agents/agencies were so "hungry" for customers because they get a cry out of every premium?

So are you saying your son has never had his own insurance?

If that's the case how would they know he pays his bills on time.

If he has good credit, what's the problem?  Why the reluctance?

Yes he had his own insurance. He hit a deer in April. His car was 20 years old and totaled. He then bought my car.

I went out and bought a new car. But State Farm would not change the insurance from my old car into his name.

I am now carrying insurance on 2 cars (my old car and my new car) in my name. Since State Farm will not change the insurance on the car my son now drives into his name,

Since this is the case just have him get insurance someplace else. He can go online and get it right away for the most part. I can't tell if your issue is with your agent or State Farm itself but there's no need to be loyal to them.

I can't really tell if he's the one trying to get the insurance with State Farm or if you made the calls. I don't imagine you can do that for someone else. When I didn't have a car for like 2 months my insurance gave me 6 months to put a new car on it before I had to go through any nonsense like a new customer.

Re: New Procedures for Car Insurance?

Anyone can pull a credit report on you and not notify you.  It's called a "soft inquiry".  Perfectly legal.  If a "hard inquiry" is pulled then you must be notified.  Two types of credit reports.

I was speaking with my agent this afternoon coincidentally.  She said that insurance rates for homeowners/auto have gone up dramatically this year due to all the natural disasters.  Many policies doubled for no apparent reason at all.  I was lucky.  Mine renews at the end of the month with just a $300 increase.

Insurance is regulated by STATE laws.    Is is possible your legislature has made some recent changes?
