@eadu4 wrote:@drizzellla not sure why you would "transfer" your coverage. You should have cancelled your policy on the car and then he should have opened a new policy in his name. I have never "transferred"a policy, when my daughter took over my Corolla years ago I cancelled it and she got her own policy. She shopped around and got a good rate for herself else where. To my knowledge it can't just be transferred but rather you cancel yours and he would open a new one that is his based on the coverage he required regardless of if he wanted the same. His age is different, driving habits etc and they base rates on that as well. Single young male vs married older woman.
Saying transferred was a bad choice of words. Yes, we have asked the insurance agent repeatedly to remove my name from the insurance policy on the car that is presently in my son's name.

@riley1 wrote:@drizzellla - just going to throw this out there. When he purchased your car, did you write out a receipt for him showing what he paid?
Secondly, when you bought your new car, they should have transferred your insurance (plus any new expenses since its new) to your name. Your son at that point should have gotten his own insurance policy for your old car. Does he also have the title to the car now in his name?
This might be where some of the confusion is coming from. Make an appt and see your agent face to face with all paperwork needed.
WELL - When I went to pick up my car, we tried to get hold of my insurance agent. I had to wait a month for my car (the dealer had no new cars on their lot). We were told "my car" would arrive in a month to 6 weeks. So we got the call the car came in. Tried to call my insurance agent. No one answered - left a voice message. Called several times. Finance guy called insurance agent- always no answer, left message.
Somehow Finace guy at car dealer processed the sale of the car to me. I signed numerous papers. And after 6 hours, finally walked out with my car.
At the time we had not spoken to our insurance agent. The agent did not call us until the next day. And they wanted payment "right now". Payment for my new car. OK no problem.
My husband wanted to know if insurance agent took into acoount the portion of insurance payments for future months that we had paid on my old car's insurance. All policies were paid for 6 months and my former car still had 4 months premium that were paid in advance.
Agent got upset she never answered his questions. She wanted payment for 6 months and my husband asked for a breakdown of payments. It has been about 2 weeks and no information.
In the mean time she also billed for 6 months payment on my old car (now my son's). My son paid it, even though it was in my name.
Yes, the title of my old car is now in my son's name. No receipt was written or signed.
We tried to get the insurance in my son's name but insurance agent insists that we get a credit report on him before she will transfer to his name. But he had been paying his own insurance on his own cars for 20 years with the same agency.
@drizzellla First of all I would change agents. I have never heard of an agent that doesn't pick up their phone, if that is the case they should be shut down. Do you have ID cards in your state? If so there is no way you could register your car without it and that is proof that you have insurance.

@drizzellla are you still with that Agent or have you switched? Hope everything worked out for your son.

Oh, we are changing insurance agents. We "inherited" this agent when our former agent retired. Never had contact with her because we just paid our premiums and there has been no interaction with her because there was no "insurance trouble until buying my car".
So we were shocked that we were unable to contact anyone in her office for an entire day. And it was a Monday. We left numerous voice messages throughout the day. And no one got back to us until the next day. We were told they were in a meeting. We tried calling from 10 AM to 4 PM.
Yes, we have to have proof of insurance cards. I was given a piece of paper with "Pennsylvania Financial Responsibility Identification Card" on the top of the paper, before I left the dealership. It expired in less than 2 months. Not sure how dealership Finance guy worked it out. He did not say. He just handed me the paper and said it expired August 1, 2024, so work it out with your agent before then.

My husband is shopping right now. The agent has never gotten back to us. She insisted that we pay 6 months premium on the new car - no problem. BUT we had paid 6 months premiums on "my old car" insurance. There were still 4 premium months that were for future months. So my husband feels we are due a refund or credit for the 4 months.
THEN the agent sent a 6 month bill for my old car. My son automatically paid the bill. He didn't want any trouble. BUT there should have been 4 months credit on my old car insurance bill. And since the insurance is still in my name, I don't know how she could have billed "my old car" for 6 months when the insurance was already paid up through October.
The relationship is beyond repair.

@drizzellla I think "remove your name" is misleading as well. The policy just needed cancelled as it was no longer your car, your payment and basically had nothing any longer to do with you. Yes it's your son but in the end he needed to start a brand new policy. The fact you had a policy on this car has no bearing on a policy he needs. You being a long time customer again has no bearing on his policy. They write the policy on risk factors including age, marital status, driving habits and combine that with make model mileage etc. They aren't concerned with what you did with the car that was you. They need to look at him. All that needed done was tell them cancel the policy on this car my son bought from me he will contact you to discuss pricing for a new policy. I think this was more confusing than it needed to be. Just cancel and he can call around and find what coverage and payments work best for him. You just needed to call and ask them to remove that car from your policy not your name and tell them the new owner will contact them if he wants to go with them. They wil treat him as a new customer. 😊 They aren't going to care that he is your son unless you are going to be making the policy payments.

That is so confusing. The title was transfered but yet the Agent is still saying it's your car. Maybe what you should have done was cancel the insurance on the car and your son would have gotten his insurance maybe from them or some other place. From what I can see you should be getting a refund one of these days.

@Pecky You got me thinking about how did I get an Insurance Card, so I could walk out of the dealer with my new car?
We were never able to talk to our agent, the day we were picking up my car. The Finance guy was never able to talk to our agent. In fact Finance guy came up to us later in the afternoon and asked if our agent called us back. We said, No.
He walked back to his office. Then about half an hour later. Suddenly all systems were go. Had lots of papers to sign and then given the keys to my car. By then it was 4:30 and everyone was ready to call it a day, especially me.
I wonder if Finance Guy went over our agent and went directly to the home office for State Farm. And that is how he was able to get an insurance card for almost 2 months. And that is why he said, be sure to get with your agent because it expires August 1, 2024. He said it as we were walking out the door to get to my car. So I was thinking more about the car than insurance.
And that may explain why the agent has not been a happy camper with us. She was upset from our first phone car after buying the car. Now Home Office knows her office was not available for an entire day.

@drizzellla He must have gotten through to someone some how to get your id cards. The insurance company should have mailed you the permanent id cards. What a nightmare you went through. I hope things gets resolved for your son.

In order to get an insurance Card all I had to do was sign in to my account and print it.
I know some people might prefer to have it mailed instead.
