I think all of our posts are proving my original point.  When you have both sides of the mouth talking with mixed messages, people tune out.  I did because who does a lay person like me know what to believe?

I don't have time for it with a full time job, burying relatives, and supporting elder family members.  The media needs to get their act together and report more responsibly.

I won't hold my breath on the media reporting responsibly. All they care about it stirring up emotions to boost ratings.

While boosting ratings is important, the many people I know very well in the media care way more about reporting facts than getting emotions riled up.

I was just about to post the same thing.

I don't recall anyone telling the public then not to or that it would  create a shortage.  Maybe that's why we have a shortage now? Haha, I doubt it because many people bought it back then. Ummm, it *was* being sent through the mail...maybe not to the extent people thought it would happen, but it *wasn't* "fake news..."

Absolutely not fake news.  Several envelopes arrived at a building I worked in, and I know someone who had one personally addressed to him in another building.

@Lali1 Sadly, if you talk to the doctors and the nurses working in the covid units in the hard hit areas, this is just not accurate.  In fact, a nurse I know working in Miami wants to know why it isn't raising alarm all over the country.  She is so very frustrated and tired from working covid ICUs and has no idea how they are going to manage.

They would certainly take issue with the media just trying to stir up emotions to boost ratings.  But I have a feeling the ones I know would say "do it more" because we are drowning here and no one seems to care what is going on out there.

So please, send more of this emotion stirring media her way in Miami would ya?  Because evidently, it hasn't stirred emotions enough in her area.  At least enough to change behavior so that transmission rate starts to drop and they stop seeing younger and younger people in the ICU.

She has a 27 year old in the ICU in critical condition  on a ventilator and is struggling with the fact that the wife just can't grasp how very serious her husband is because they just went to a swimming party and someone there ended up testing positive.  He's young you know and is supposed to do just peachy keen even if he does get it. And you know....it's just the media blowing things out of proportion and trying to scare everyone.

Too bad for this 27 year old.  Sure hope he makes it and hope he recovers without long term impact.  But you know, if you talk about it...it is just the media stirring up emotion.

It is a fact that the media stirs up emotions to get better ratings. Believe what you want. I won't be their puppet and get riled up because they want me to. My post mentioned nothing about the virus so why you needed to post the long lecture to me is confusing. I have stayed home and don't need to be told to take this virus seriously.

@Lali1, not saying you aren't staying and home.  Glad that you are and that you are taking this virus seriously.

I responded to your post because I hear this over and over from the nurses that I know out there working in these units, that they want the media to cover it more.  This isn't them trying to create hysteria, they are under the gun and seeing that people many are out there not taking it seriously and think that if more people hear about the situation in the hospital it might ammend behavior.

They are simply exhausted, but furthermore...discouraged that people continue to try and discount the severity of the virus, that young people don't die, and that the media is trying to blow this out of proportion.

I am one that happens to be glad they are there covering the stories and trying to get the information out to the public so people know what is going on in their own communities and in other parts of the country.

Not sure where you're getting your information from  but as of  15Jul according to the European Centre for Disease Control and Prevention

Europe has 2.7 million cases of Covid 19 with over 200,000 deaths.

Florida has 300,000 cases with 4,250 deaths.

It's not helpful to post inaccurate information.

Sorry @CathyNY,  I wasn't really clear, but it isn't really inaccurate information.  I just failed to type daily positive cases.  I didn't mention anything about deaths.  @jonbon posted on of the news articles that cites the information about Florida having more daily positive cases than the same time period for all of Europe combined.

@NYC Susan, I remember several cases of anthrax ladden letters being sent via mail.  As I remember there were several that were determined to contain anthrax.  I also remember one of our medical professors that also had quite a bit of experience with anthrax was called to work on the situation.

@bunnygirlbrem yes I know it wasn't fake news but it was fake news in my part of the country.  Never happened here despite all the talking about it and we were never discouraged by our GP to get each of us get a prescription for CIPRO for absolutely nothing, both of us had no illness whatsoever.  But he filled that request and all we said was we heard in the news one needs CIPRO if they get a dose of anthrax. Strange times.

Re: New Mask Thread....warning if mask threads upset you😷

Which recommendations?   The one that told us to NOT wear masks because it wasn't necessary or the one now that says, oh yeah, on second thought wear a mask.    And then when confronted with the flip flop they said they only said that so people wouldn't buy them all up to preserve for medical workers. If that was the case back then, why not be honest about and not tell us FIRMLY that masks will NOT help you from getting the virus.    They didn't need to lie back then if they truly felt it was necessary.     Credibility is important.   And while we learn new things we didn't know every day, I don't think this was one we didn't know.   All we saw on TV were people in China wearing face masks everywhere.

I personally wear one when I go to any place where there are more than one or two people.    But I also respect the right of those who don't choose to wear one.   I just don't get close to them.     We need to respect others choices.   That doesn't mean we can't disagree but we have the choice and ability to distance ourselves from them if we are concerned.

@Memebell If someone is sick, 6' away is not far enough away for me.  I often wonder if I've been in the same building with sick people when grocery shopping.  I don't feel like I have to respect someone for refusing to wear a mask during a pandemic.

Re: New Mask Thread....warning if mask threads upset you😷

I'm totally exhausted with all the excuses for wearing or not wearing a mask.  You will all do what you want to do.  The only thing I believe is that if we all wore masks back in March for just a month, this cursed virus might have lost interest in us by now and we might be on the road to normal lives.  You are all free to believe it's a hoax, it's real or it's an ordinary flu.  I'm just me!

Re: New Mask Thread....warning if mask threads upset you😷

If 6 ft away is not enough for you, then it sounds like you are adding your own twist to the current guidelines.    That is not coming from anyone medical who is in charge of overlooking the pandemic.

No sane person wants to get the virus or pass it along to others. And I do respect your decision to stay more than six feet away from people and since it sounds like you do, be aware at that distance the current guidelines say a mask is not necessary.   It's a mask OR six feet away.   And a mask without distancing and avid hand washing creates a false safety net.    In fact I think it's third among the things we have been told to do for protection.  I think people are starting to rely too much on face masks as their only line of protection and have eased up on the hand washing and other sanitizing things.

Once again, I DO wear a mask if I am around more than one or two people.   But we can all be smart about protecting ourselves without getting angry at those who don't.    That being said, if someone's state mandates wearing one, people should follow what their state has asked them to do.  However, even that still doesn't need to evoke anger in us if they don't.
