You're kind to want to offer.  I've done it both ways in the past.  If they're paying for all of it, you will get the "ugly" side (the cross-bar reinforcement Xs showing instead of the pristine straight wood lines).

I wouldn't offer to help with the cost, but I would allow them on my property to maintain the side of the fence that faces me to stain, paint...or whatever.

My sister had a neighbor that would not allow her to stain the fence on the side facing them if She had to come onto their property to do so.  Weird people, IMO.

That isn't how it is where I live.  A fence requires a permit and has to be so far off the lot line (can't remember how far), but it can not be on the lot line.  Also, the most attractive side goes toward the neighbor.  I have noticed this seems to be the case on most flip shows on HGTV.  The cross bars go on the inside of the property...facing the owner of the fence.

how do you know they aren't going to put up a wooden fence right up against the chain link fence inside of their property?

I don't think it would be any different if they paid for half of the fence, the one putting up the fence is not going to put the 'pristine' side facing their neighbor's property and the 'ugly' side facing their own property.. 

We won't accept an offer of contribution when we make our fence change, even if it's offered.

If my neighbors don't like looking at the back of our fence, then they have the option of putting up their own at their own expense.

I'm very neighborly, but I won't let neighbors make decisions re: my fencing needs.

Luckily, they're the kind of neighbors who wouldn't expect to either..

It would be nice...but does not happen very often. I replaced my 30 year old wooden fence at $10,000. I never asked any neighbor to pay for the portion between our yards....too much trouble. I bought what I wanted and put it up.

Not that I've ever been aware of.  

We moved into a new home that builder provided 6' redwood fencing around each lot.  We decided we wanted something "animal safe" (neighbor had a big dog that acted like he wanted to come through the redwood). 

We opted to put in 6' chain link on our side of the redwood .... paid for it ourselves.  It was on our property.

@shy bobcat   In our area a fence cannot be in the easement...there must be room on each side of the property line for utilities to get into the yard.  We do not have zero easements.  I would not help pay for a fence that is not on my  yard.

There are many fences in our neighborhood, none shared.

That's tricky.  Because I would not allow a pain/stain color that I did not agree with facing my yard. Technically I suppose it's their right to whatever color they choose, but it would be darn rude to paint it something I didn't care for.
