@mousiegirl The dog is a big dog, a mutt, about the size of a German Shepherd.  When it is in attack mode, the hair stands up on the middle of its back like a ridge!

If the dog is a mutt why are posters in an uproar about pit bulls?

No one's in an uproar. One poster said there was a "mean pit bull" in her neighborhood. Another poster said that not all pit bulls are mean. There were a few that insisted they are, and a few who insisted no, *all* pitbull type dogs are not killers; that's about it as far as the pitbull conversation, which has taken place within the thread alongside the conversation about the dog the OP is afraid of.

I had a next door neighbor that had a small dog that yapped constantly at nothing.  I was so happy when she moved.  The new neighbors have two greyhound rescues and a boxer.  Never hear a peep out of those dogs.  I have a 75 pound dog who will bark but only for a reason (unfortunately he hates small dogs so he barks at those).

You must be reading a different thread than the one I'm reading.

A few quotes from fellow posters...

"We also had two Pitts who lived near us.  We would never walk past their fenced in yard because they became "killer dogs"   They once jumped the fence and attacked another dog on a leash and it's elderly owner.  The owners had to pay the vet bill of. The dog they hurt, but their dogs were still a menace."

"We had neighbors who had Pit Bulls and while the neighbors were nice the dogs were mean."

"It looked like a bulldog-pitbull type mix......he warned us the dog growled at some of the other residents....but luckily the dog didn't react that way to my husband or myself....but there was something i didn't trust about the dog....so i avoided it as much as i could.............in the end.... the dog attacked the man's wife and they had to get rid of the dog.....its has been so nice since they got rid of the dog and we feel we can go outside without running into the animal.."

"WRONG." [reply to a positive post on pit bulls]

"The two dogs that my husband had to kill were some sort of Pit breed.  These two were meaner than a junk yard dog and hated smaller dogs with a passion.  I don't know what the problem was with these dogs, but it was clear that they were not safe to have around people or pets."

"My FILs pitbull was leashed and attacked another small dog and killed it at a children's little league game, in front of everyone.  It was horrible!  They always said she was as gentle as a lamb.  Let grandkids climb all over her and pull on her.  It gave me chills to see that and my kids were old enough to listen to me to stay away from her."

"Those who don't believe Pit breeds are dangerous and way too aggressive are in denial."

"A 2009 report issued by DogsBite.org shows that 19 dog breeds contributed to 88 deaths in the 3-year period of 2006 to 2008. Pit bulls accounted for 59% followed by rottweilers with 14%. Of the 88 fatal dog attacks recorded by DogsBite.org, pit bull type dogs were responsible for 59%"
