I'd put it in the outgoing mail slot that I assume the apartment's mailbox stack has. At least, I'd do that unless I knew the person to whom the envelope was addressed. Then, I might call.
I live in a condo development. Mail goes astray. Mail comes back to its rightful owner - and it happens both ways. I've never heard anyone blame a neighbor for returning a piece of mail either way.

Don't believe me? Ask your letter carrier. SMH
eyeball and eyeroll right back. It was IN the trash. That means it was thrown away. No, I wouldn't have opened it, but it was trash. "geez...the drama". Yes...

Yes, it was. Being in the trash doesn't give someone the right to open it.

Obviously this will bother you if you don't do something. Take it to the post office, tell them you saw it on the ground, they will deliver it again and you are out of the equation. Can't believe you opened someone's mail. Next time stay out of the trash.

just take it back to her............she'll be happy to have it and as far as any suspicions that you opened it..........the check it there, that proves you're not a thief................................raven

If there was an address on it, it would be easy to just redirect it to the intended person.
What point was there in opening it? Not accusing anyone but I cannot understand what opening it was supposed to accomplish?

How do you know she'll be happy to have it? Perhaps she has an estranged relationship with the sender and didn't want it. Maybe SHE threw it in the trash. Regardless, not for the OP to decide. I certainly wouldn't take it to her in person....if someone showed up on my doorstep with a piece of my mail that they opened I would think that was a little strange. Just because the check is in there might prove she isn't a thief, but it doesn't explain why someone would pick a card out of the garbage and open it.
Did I miss some critical piece of information as to why the OP didn't just put the card in the recipient's mailbox?

It could haven fallen out of the mailman's bag since the trash can is close to the mailboxes. I found two cards in the street from my house where my mailman parks his mail truck. I decided to look at the address and they were for a neighbor 2 doors down. My mailman is an idiot so I wasn't surprised. I'm lucky to get my own mail. I put them in the neighbors mailbox and went on my merry way. I was afraid if there was money in there that someone else would find it and keep it.
I would put her card under her door and let her decide if she wants it or not. Since the check is in there I wouldn't worry that it was opened. Done deal. She probably never saw it.
I don't look at my mail when I get it. I need my glasses which aren't on me at the time and I figure it's for me. If it isn't mine I mark it and return to the PO or stick it in their mailbox. It's usually junk mail anyway. My mailman loves to do this.
My mm had someone follow him on his route once and I could hear him complaining to someone on his cell phone from clear down the block, he was that mad and that loud. The next day he had a supervisor follow him and my mm purposely walked as slow as he possibly could. It was actually pretty funny. I have called on him before and they make excuses for him. Since he man handles my mail I let it slide. I should have called on this last mail thing but I want my mail in one piece and I'm waiting on a check!
