I probably should know this, but -- how long do you keep nail polish?  I have some that are years old although the colors are still up to date. How do I get rid of them?

Thanks for any answers.

Re: Nail polish-dumb question

We have a toxic waste center for paints and chemicals that is where I take my old polish

I keep mine for quite awhile.  If I use a nail polish thinner when the polish gets a bit "clumpy" , the polish is very usable and last much longer.  I buy the thinner at a beauty supply, but you can get smaller bottles at Ulta, etc.  They're just more expensive.  It lasts a very long time because you only need a few drops to thin out the polish.  I've had my 4 oz. bottle for about 10 years.  What I like is using the thinner allows me to use the polish down to the bottom of the bottle.

Re: Nail polish-dumb question

I think it probably depends on the brand and type of polish. Here's what I do: check to see if the polish is starting to seperate where you can see the oil at the top of the bottle. If you shake it or roll the bottle --does it mix well? If not, discard it. Now for base, top or treatment nail products--these tend to thicken quickly once opened. Those, I would sorth thru as I use them. Hope this helps.

You can keep most for many years, just use a polish thinner when needed.

I throw it away when it gets too thick, or has separated. In recent years I’ve gone with pales and sheers, so no out-of-date color issues.
