It makes total sense to me, since I "Skip the Stuff" anyway.

That's the first thing I get rid of, as I can't stand plastic utensils.

Good for NYC~~~

@jackiejenny are you telling them to keep it or are you bringing it home to throw away?  If it's the latter you really aren't skipping the stuff .

I tell them to keep it and if it's in there after that, I give it back.

So yes, I am skipping the stuff.

I think this is an excellent idea @THEY CallMe Mr Wilkes .  I wish it all cities would follow.

Also, for one year there will be no fines or penalties during an "education" period.

There will be warnings based on inspections and violator reports.

Enforcement is carried out jointly by the City's Department of Sanitation and Department of Consumer Affairs.

Re: NYC Food Take-Out: "Skip the Stuff"

I use the utensils I get from ordering fast food. It's more convenient because I don't have to worry about washing utensils after I'm finished eating. It wouldn't be good for me, I would probably forget to ask for the utensils. One of the many reasons I moved out of the NYC.

Re: NYC Food Take-Out: "Skip the Stuff"

We use food delivery apps a lot in this house.  The apps don't have a "no utensils" option but many of the restaurants we order from do.  We never request utensils, which includes napkins.  But having to opt in for condiments is ridiculous.  That's part of the food order.  I understand where they are going with this but that part makes no sense.

🍔 🍟 Was any action ever taken when NYC was proposing to ban the Big Gulp soft drinks (32+ ounces) or Super Size Meals?

If you Just Say No to plastic silverware or condiments, you should be rewarded with your choice of a complimentary cookie or small frues for 5¢.

Panera has had a toggle button on the online order screen fot quite s while to indicate if you need utensils. I think its a great idea.

A new NYC ordinance,  known as "Skip the Stuff" becomes effective today.

It prohibits food establishments from adding utensils, napkins and condiment packets to take out and delivery orders, unless specifically requested by the purchaser.

Food order apps must default to no add-ons and the buyer must enter the request.

Makes sense to me, considering the large number of plastic utensils disposed of annually.  When I have take out to bring home I use my own utensils and I have basic condiments.

For Chinese I'll have to remember to request condiments.

I've read that New Jersey is considering something similar statewide.

Thanks for sharing, and letting us know about this.

I live in Wisconsin and while my husband and I don't order out on-line all that much, I have noticed that some restaurants are either charging extra for an extra condiment cup, or if they're not charging extra for it, they're limiting how many packets of sauce they give you.

I have also noticed that some places do not automatically give you the plastic cutlery or napkins with your carry-out meal.

We ordered a carry-out meal on-line tonight and on the menu selection there was a small box that we could check if we wanted plastic cutlery and napkins. There was no extra charge for them.

I agree with those who say that we should be offered the choice of condiments and napkins and cutlery, even if there is a fee for it, because we may not be taking our meals home.

We may be eating them elsewhere where we may not have those things available to us, so it's convenient if we can have them come with our meals.
