This makes me so sad.  I'm a native New Yorker,  and as a child my mom took me every year to see the Christmas show, the tree and the decorated store windows.  My mom worked in midtown Manhattan in the 1930's and I remember her telling me she and others walking by would stop and watch as the construction of Radio City progressed.

 

There are some traditions we think will go on forever and this was one of them for me. Hopefully it will return someday.
