Several years ago, there was an overpopulation of deer in Valley Forge National Park.  There's a state highway that runs through the park and driving through the area at dusk or dawn was very hazardous.  You'd see herds of 10-20 of them very close to the road.  They apparently tried various methods of thinning them with no success.

On one designated day, a group of sharpshooters was invited to the park, and they eradicated dozens of them.

To this day, you see few deer when driving through the area.

@Kachina624   Can't deer meat be used to feed people though.  You could thin many deer, and at least people who are needy could eat

@shoekitty,  yes the meat could be used to feed  people but the logistics of doing so under the sniper culling concept taking "dozens" at a time would be nearly impossible.

There would have to a sufficient number of people and equipment on the ground capable of quickly field dressing each deer then getting the carcass to a processor quickly.

Uncomfortable situation but I have to think about the wildlife that will benefit from the downed deer.

Too many humans.  People complain about housing shortages, then they complain about too much development.

Re: My first Protest

[ Edited ]

@Snowpuppy  I was born and raised in Michigan, not the UP so never saw them because of where we lived. But here in 2015 during the last bear hunt, the hunters went against all the rules set in place and killed many mothers and cubs, in addition to baiting them, also against the rules. I have only been here a year, but I know the story. This is why it was shut down early after 3 days. This is why it is such a controversial topic here right now. After what happened before, it's unbelievable to me they are going to let people from all over the Country come here and do it again. This, under the guise of "control" for the safety of people. It's to appease the public when it's really a trophy hunt plain and simple. If it wasn't, they would be looking at other ways to solve the issues. Can't wait to get out of this over crowded hotbox!

@Big Joanie - it's happening on the east coast, as well. Wherever there's an empty piece of land, up go the apartments. It's beginning to look like NYC, a concrete jungle. 🤦🏼‍♀️

There's always a lot to be thankful for if you take time to look for it.
For example, I am sitting here thinking how nice it is that wrinkles don't hurt.

Greedy developers and short sighted city planners have used their influence for many decades to squash the warnings of scientists and conservationists. The chickens have now come home to roost and we are on the cusp of bigger tragedies. All living things are interrelated; what happens to one happens to all, an inconvenient truth, whether we like it or not.

I agree. Another thought I have is....I remember, in the past, when we wanted to move (which we did 3 or 4 times) we looked at houses up for sale. Today, more and more people want new.  Greedy developers then cash in on this "need". It seems to me there are plenty of nice empty homes for sale. I think that should be promoted more then it is. I realize that's probably not going to happen but one can dream. In the world today people all want

"more" no matter the cost.

I have mixed feelings about this. People should be able to feel safe at their homes. If a bear killed my dog or hurt one of my family I would want it dead. It's too bad they don't have a relocation plan for these bears that wander too close to humans and their living

quarters.

Maybe humans shouldn't have invaded their spaces. That only forces animals into other areas.
