Moving toward energy independance

Per an article on Bloomberg - the USA produced 89% of the energy it used last year , moving us so much closer to energy independence. We only buy 11% of our oil now and most of that from South America - which are not OPEC countries. That is why OPEC has had to drastically lower their prices. Which is why we are so much happier at the pump. Add to that our natural gas and energy produced by wind.

Are the big oil companies and those politicians they hold in their back pockets happy about this - of course not. But at least for the next 2 years energy should be stable.

Venezuela was a founding member of OPEC and is still the largest producer in South America. My understanding is that the US currently imports more from Canada however.

I am just repeating from the article - i have no personal knowledge on this subject. It did show a graft that we buiy a lot of oil from Argentina.

Personally, I think it is great that US is moving toward energy self-sufficiency. This is a priority; bring jobs nationally as well as drives down prices. It is a positive move.

Re: Moving toward energy independance

I too read that we buy much of our petroleum from Canada. However, the further we can get from the Mid East and our dependence on them, the better. And yes, there ARE other member nations in OPEC besides those in the Mid East. Now, if we can just move beyond fossil fuels to other forms of energy as our dominant consumption sources, we would be on the right track, though I doubt the oil lobby will allow that to happen.
