I don't know if you can answer it for me.

Our daughter turns 26 on the 24th of this month and I've been told she's off our insurance as of her birthday.

She has taken care of getting her own insurance through the open enrollment at her job but it won't go into effect until 1/1.

If she goes without coverage for that last week of the year will she be fined?

TIA.

I'm not Terrier, but the fee only applies to someone who is uninsured for more than 3 months in 2014. So if it will just be that week, she won't have to pay. HTH!

Doesn't that count as a life event though? She shouldn't have to wait to get coverage.

I just went through this with my Daughter. She should check to see about getting on her company's insurance. Even though it is before the 1st of the year. It is a change because she turned 26 and her company's Insurance can activate her insurance for the remainder of the year. Otherwise there is crazy priced Cobra. My DD went one day between my insurance and hers.

You are correct. The OP's daughter doesn't have to wait, and she is able to obtain a policy outside of open enrollment to cover her for the remainder of this year if she chooses to (I know she could obtain one on her own, and I assume she could obtain one through her employer.) It sounds like she doesn't want to do that though. Might be a lot of red tape for one week's worth of coverage. I would probably elect to get the coverage, but I can see where not everyone would make the same decision.

I thought so. If she 26 any time through the year, she should be able to get coverage right away. You shouldn't have to wait for open enrollment.

Thanks, WenGirl.

I have never heard of a policy cancelling at any other time but the END OF THE MONTH. Do you think the insurance carrier will pro-rate a reimbursement for the time period 12/24-31?
