Yes, what you described is hospital policy for handling patient valuables. And if that procedure is followed, the patients chart reflects there were valuables, the patient has a receipt, and if the items are lost, the hospital takes responsibility.
However, if this process cannot be completed due to the medical situation, the patient is often not compensated for their loss.
