Vick was only sentenced for racketeering and not the dog fighting/torturing itself - which is beyond my understanding. He has not redeemed himself. He has only been a 'spokesman' for certain questionable orgazinations. If he really meant to redeem himself and make things right, he would get down in the trenches and work in a humane society or rescue group cleaning cages and taking care of animals for a number of years. I have no respect for him!

In turn,
It's lovely to see so many vegetarians on these boards!
I am a vegetarian,Sid. And I do love to see the outrage of kind people here. So glad you do ,too. 😁

However I do have exceptions to this and while he has served his time and is free to do as he wishes, as a human being I find him repulsive. My exceptions are for people who hurt others that can't defend themfselves. Children, seniors, disabled and animals are on that list.
This is a man who grabbed a dog by his front legs and back legs, raised him over his head and repeatedly slammed that animal on the ground until he was dead. I find nothing but utter disgust for a person who could do such a thing to an animal at his mercy. I likely will never change my opinion of him. I DO NOT CARE HOW HE WAS RAISED. You do not need to be raised in special circumstances or love for animals to know that is wrong and horrible.
There are many circumstances where people have murdered and have served their time and I am fine with that. When a person does what he did to a defenseless animal, not just once but over and over again, to me he is a person who should be shunned by society. That is how I feel and I am not the least bit ashamed of it.
My father always told me you could tell everything you needed to know about a person by the way they treated animals, defenseless children and handicapped/senior and defenseless adults. He was absolutely right.
Do you have a source for the action you described in your third paragraph? Because I don't remember that specific charge.
It wasn't just one source but many.
"As that dog lay on the ground, fighting for air, Quanis Phillips grabbed its front legs and Michael Vick grabbed its back legs. They swung the dog over their head like a jump rope then slammed it to the ground. The first impact didn't kill it. So, Phillips and Vick slammed it again. The two men kept at it, alternating back and forth, pounding the creature against the ground until, at last, the little red dog was dead."
It was taken from criminal reports and written in a book by Jim Goran "The Lost Dogs: Michael Vick's Dogs and Their Tale of Rescue and Redemption."
Thank you. It sounded like Vick acted alone in the specific case you mentioned.
I don't condone what he did. He was guilty and served time. Whether anyone here or anywhere considers it enough time, it was what he was sentenced to serve.
I will say again what I said at the time. It was unpopular then as I'm sure it will be now. Dogfighting is part of his culture. Although on some level he knew it was wrong, I have no doubt he was shocked at the outrage at his actions.
There's dogfighting in my area engaged in primarily by one ethnic group and chickenfighting engaged in primarily by another ethnic group. It's a culture thing.

For whoever mentioned PETA, read this and decide how ethical their treatment of THIS particular pet was:

I am so tired of cultural relativism being used to excuse almost any behavior.
In this case, the man was supposedly a college graduate. He was making millions of dollars and hence was exposed to different standards. He was not a kid on the streets. He actively chose to hang with those he chose to hang with just as he actively chose to pursue the path he pursued. If he was shocked by the outcry, he shouldn't have been.

I'm not excusing anything.

You're right. You were explaining, not excusing. Either way, though, I guess for me, it doesn't fly...

The man took responsibility, erved his time and moved on with his life. I have more respect for him than I do for those who haven't learned to forgive.

This isn't just about serving time, for heaven's sake. Did you READ what he did to those dogs? If you respect him then that's on you...
