He's served his time, apologized, and performed community service in Philadelphia.  I think he should be forgiven.

Michael Vick served his time and learned from his mistakes.  He is older and wiser.  At the time of his conviction chicken fights were still legal in some states.  Not everyone grows up with an appreciation for the life of animals.  Michael Vick knows what he did was wrong and shown growth.  The lack of forgiveness expressed on this message board is sad to read.

Chicken fights?  You do know these were dogs right?  Dogs he electrocuted and drowned.  Even chickens deserve better than that but to use that as an excuse is pathetic.  You think he served his time and learned from his mistakes?  And you know that how?  Because he said he was sorry?  Because he's no longer torturing innocent animals for his perverse pleasure?  Sorry for the newsflash but people like Michael Vick only learn ONE thing and that's how to be more careful the next time they do something illegal.

Yours is an interesting observation that "not everyone grows up with an appreciation for the life of animals" and while that might be true, most people can make a distinction between not having an appreciation and torturing and killing innocent living creatures. Michael Vick makes me sick.  Good for you and others who think he's done his time and deserves a second chance as for me, there's nothing he could ever do to redeem himself.  Nothing.  Ever.  He's about as low on the food chain as one can get.

What Michael Vick did was horrible and incomprehensible.  But, I have forgiven him. I feel he was truly sorry for what he did and has tried to help with his HSUS work to help end dog fighting.

Either is barbaric.

I can't speak for John, but I was correcting the erroneous perception that he'd been convicted for chicken fighting, though perhaps the reference was to him, you know, as the chicken...

It was dog fights, not chicken fights... And sometimes, outside of sainthood, forgiveness for something so intrinsically ignorant, cruel, depraved and mean spirited is hard to come by...

I know it was dog fights.  But chicken fights were still legal in parts of America.  Do you place more value on and have more empathy for the suffering of one animal over another?  Do you protest the cruelty that cows and pigs endure before and when they slaughtered to become our dinner?

I love dogs and had one for nearly 14 years.  But I will not hold Vick's actions against him for the rest of his life.  Vick has worked to make amends for his actions.   He has a right to make a living for his family in his chosen profession.

So you knew it was dog fighting but just chose to throw the chicken thing out as what, a diversion...

Barbaric is barbaric and last time I looked he wasn't slaughtering dogs for dinner...

I never said he was convicted for chicken fighting.

Why would a chicken being fought till the death be any different than a dog???

Chickens, cows, calves, pigs, many treated poorly, then slaughtered.

Their miserable existence over....for your dining pleasure.

What Vick did was no worse than if you grabbed a drumstick from a Kentucky Fried Chicken bucket.*

*KFC just used as an example.  Many meat and poultry producers do not worry about humane treatment of animals.

Chicken fighting shouldn't be treated any differently. They're both imbecilic and both now illegal... And neither one is conducted to make dinner.

Chicken fights?  He was convicted of facilitating dog fights.  He even drowned and hanged some of them that didn't perform well.   I read a lot about him at the time that this happened and just Googled him to make sure I had my facts correct.

Maybe I'm not understanding you and chicken fights is another term for dog fights??

We are a country of contradictions.  At the time of Vick's conviction and public backlash people could still legally conduct chicken fights in some parts of the country.  The animals that serve as our sources of meat are often held in horrible conditions.  Their slaughter is often cruel and crudely done.  But we ignore it.  People often hunt for sport and not out of a need for food.   But puppies and kittens are different.

I will not treat Michael Vick like a pariah for actions he has already been punished for.  People are more than their pasts.  Vick has lived a quiet life with his family without controversy since his release.  He has been liked by his fellow players.  I will not sit in judgement of him forever.  Forgiveness is not just an abstract thing for me.

That's very noble of you. Perhaps one day we all will attain such a state of nobility.

Being able to forgive is not noble.  I try to live my faith.   I believe his life also has value.  I believe people can rise above past mistakes.  You don't have to agree or share my views.  But there is no need to be condescending or patronizing.
