Re: Michael Chiarello’s Death

As @Etoile308 said, you can develop a sudden allergy to something you were never allergic to in the past.  At age 36, I suddenly developed an allergy to shellfish after being a lifelong consumer of crab, lobster, etc.

Re: Michael Chiarello’s Death

@ROMARYUnfortunately, my mother refused the autopsy that day. My father was in the chemo room at the VA. My mom and I left him to run out for 1/2 hour. I thought they had set-up the chemo already. When we got back, I walked into the chemo room and he was lying on the floor and they were doing CPR. They said that he complained of not feeling well, they stopped the infusion, then restarted it and that is when he went down.

They shooed me and mom out of the room, I kept talking to him and telling him to just go, it would be OK. I am a RN and know the effects of having CPR and a cancer diagnosis, living through that. He died. The experience was shocking.

I wish mom would have had the autopsy, it might have given us clues as to what happened. I am terrified of getting cancer now and needing chemo. I am terrified for anyone on chemo really.

Before they gave the chemo, they gave him anti-allergic drugs. The people in the chemo room were shocked, they said they only knew of 1 other person that this happened to.

@conlt

I am so very sorry you lost your father so tragically. I can't imagine the shock and sadness you all must have felt. My heart goes out to you and I know it must still hurt years later. I am sorry.

I've been thinking about you and your dear dad all day long.

Some people (including myself) are highly or moderately allergic to certain things, even common, everyday things that others aren't allergic to or annoyed with.

Hopefully you and everyone here will keep as safe as possible.  Wishing us all good luck.

Re: Michael Chiarello’s Death

Many years ago I became anemic and needed to get Iron infusions.
The first IV they ran was just fluid then they put in the iron IV. It took about 3 hours to finish the infusion and then a 15 minute flush.
I started to feel sick when I got into my car to drive home.
All of a sudden my fingers and feet and face started swelling up and I got extremely hot. I drove right to my Doctor and went straight to the nurse thinking I was dying by this point because I was swelling up like a blimp. I was running a fever also.
The doctor said I was having a reaction to the infusion and they injected me with benedryl and called an ambulance to take me across the street to the ER because I couldn't walk and had a temperature of 102'
I ended up in the hospital for a week!
I had the allergic reaction and a infection.
It all happened so fast, so who knows what happened. It's just sad to see that it happened to him and only 61.

Re: Michael Chiarello’s Death

To today on People it was reported that: "The doctors don’t know what caused the allergic reaction and neither does the family," a representative for Gruppo Chiarello tells PEOPLE. "They may never know."

Re: Michael Chiarello’s Death

He died at Queen Of the Valley Medical Center which according to google reviews is a terribler place to go.  I wonder if more could have been done to save him

Omgosh.......Very glad that you were and are ok.

Makes me think that it's probably a better idea to take time released iron pills.

Many, many years ago, I was prescribed iron pills........they made me 'sick' (nauseated), so I went to the pharmacy and he suggested that the doctors prescribe or suggest time released iron pills/capsules.  He also said that it's common re: straight iron pills making people nauseated and that he didn't know why docs don't suggest/prescrible time released options.

Well, keep in mind that it was many, many years ago.....maybe in the late seventies or so.......

I tried iron gummies a couple of years ago and I was fine with no side effects when taken along with eating food.  They were over the counter iron gummies.  I believe they were Nature M*de.  I might still have a few left and I'll try to find the plastic bottle.

Anyway, I'll make sure to keep away from iron infusions or shots or whatever.

Take good care, and wishing you and all of us good luck and improving health.
