I believe the only thing a paper towel mask will keep you safe from is a dirty face. The moisture from your breath would make it ineffective immediately. Non medical grade masks are to keep others safe from you. STAY THE HECK HOME!!!!!

@reiki604  I appreciate your reply.  This is new territory for most us so we're sharing ideas.  I have not tried this yet and it could be a total flop. None of the masks are designed to protect us.  If this becomes a requirement, this might be all someone has to use.

Cut up a hand towel, use an old tee shirt 3-4 layers, use a square of a high performance furnance filter folded up inside a bandana of 3-4 layers. A paper towel won't do it.

Re: Masks from paper towels

[ Edited ]

For the average person wearing a mask now seems just like something concocted to make people feel better.  Those with immune compromised issues sould have sturdier masks and not just a paper towel one since they need protection from the virus.  I am only going out less  than every 2 weeks so for me to spread the virus by having it but not knowing shouldn't be an issue so wearing a mask is not warranted.  If  others did this then in the 2 weeks  they stayed home they would show symptoms but if not it is fairly safe to say they are not carriers as the isolation period they have been saying would be over.  I was at the store a few days ago and those with masks were touching them and repositioning and no one had a mask tightly on their face.    One woman sneezed and turned her mask around.    A mask from paper towels or a scarf or bandanna seems just useless.

I think material could be used instead of paper towels such as old pillow cases, DH used a piece of an old shirt.

I purchased a dozen bandanas on prime; they arrived today.  Took me five minutes to use no sew pattern from CDC website; it'll work until my Etsy masks arrive tomorrow.

A comment was made about masks and moisture.  All I could think of was Brandon Maxwell and his "secret" of lining his clothes with neoprene.

I'm fortunate as I do have some masks....I bought them for when I mow the lawn and attempt to groom the dog (help w/allergies and sinus infections)

Masks are being recommended now because we compile more trustworthy data about this virus every day.

As new data comes in, the COVID-19 task force is realizing how many of us have the virus with minimal or no symptoms, and never develop any during the course of their "illness"...in quotes because these individuals aren't aware they're sick.

And simply speaking to others transmits more than they'd previously realized. (Eruptive coughing and sneezing to propel the virus is not needed to spread.)

The purpose of the simple disposable papertowel mask or scarf in public, such as the grocery store or pharmacy, is to keep others safe from what you may unknowingly transmit through speech, while conducting your business.

While the simple mask is no good if you're coughing, it should mitigate transmission through the little talking you need to do while out picking up your items.

How will a porous  paper towel  protect you?  Common sense folks.

@cotton4me   According to DD who's a hygienist, she and medical professionals wear masks with a wire at the top that can be bent to completely seal the area over the nose. I asked her about the only masks available to the public or made by hand and she said not to bother since the bacteria can enter all around the open areas around the top of the nose through the gaps. I say the masks I have purchased like those in video, are better than no protection at all.

Pipe cleaners can be used for this, but must be removed before washing.  Making an extra casing is an easy way of doing this.

I had thin gauge wire on a roll in the garage...could use a wire hanger, too if have wire clippers...and taped a piece to the top of our masks. Now they can be bent tightly around the nose.

How about those long paper covered wire ties that come with trash bags.

What I'm hoping is when others see me in a mask, they will think twice about getting too close.
