We have always done a budget plan with both our gas and electric companies.  We pay a set amount every month.  The amount is based on the prior year's usage.  One time a year there's an "even up" month where you pay the difference, if you happen to go over or they will give you a credit if you overpaid.  We've never had to deal with surprises like this.

Agree, have always done the same.  My last house was very large (3500 sq ft) and I paid $225 per month for both gas and electric year round except for my reconcile month where I'd pay any overage or carry any credit over to the next year.

All  lightbulbs in the house were the newer LED and in the winter I kept heat at 68 and summer kept A/C at about 78 (but my home was surrounded by lots of trees which provided lots of shade).   Years ago used to have a lot of cold weather but these days our winters are becoming milder and milder which really helps our heating bills.

I am so happy I downsized homes, downsized almost 1000 sq ft and went from my usual $300 plus December bills to $77.59 (both homes all electric). Yeah!!

My last electric bill was $66 and my gas bill was $.13--yes that's right, 13 CENTS.  Well, actually the bill was $13 and change with a $13 and change credit resulting in a $.13 bill.

Granted having recently moved to a condo, I pay HOAs, but with reduced home owners insurance, car insurance, property taxes and those crazy low utilities (and not having to pay for water, sewer and garbage), I think I am coming out ahead!

@magicmoodz  Just a heads up.  You mention not paying home owners insurance.  I've lived in a condo for 25 years, and you DO need homeowners insurance.  If the place burns down (God forbid), the association will only cover the outside shell of your condo.  The inner walls and all your possessions are not covered.  There is actually special insurance for condo owners.

@2blonde

Oh goodness no!  Perhaps I didn't make myself clear.  I DO have home owner's insurance on my condo--but it is far less money that I paid for a single family residence.

She didn't say she's not paying homeowners insurance, she said reduced homeowners insurance. Meaning it's cleaper than in her previous place.

Re: MY ENERGY BILL FOR DECEMBER WAS A WOPPING...

I live in South Texas winters aren't the problem my bill was $75 all electric and live in a condo....normally it runs in the $55 range, but we've have had abnormal temperatures in the upper 70's and even the 80's (16 degrees or more above normal) so the a/c clicked on Woman FrustratedWoman Sad    In the summer we really pay here and in the hottest months I pay about $135-$150  I keep it set on 75 in the summer and use fans too, and rarely turn on the heat in the winter....

I have an all electric home and even with a pellet stove, my bill is just under $300.
