Our winter has not been too cold and our electric bill was only $242 for December. We are total electric and are happy about that.
Since I am retired, I turn the heat down during the day because I keep busy and don't need the heat to be set too high. When it gates dark out, I turn it up to 72.
It looks like it is paying off.

@2blonde wrote:@hoosieroriginal OMG I literally would also freeze at 56 degrees. I keep my all electric condo at 72, and I'm still wearing North Face jackets and flannel pants around the house all the time! (I'm pretty skinny, though.) Can you maybe block off any rooms you aren't using, like an extra bedroom?
@2blonde - I have an A-frame which has no attic (no insulation) and it's a tri-level so my furnace just never shuts off if I put it on. I cover all the windows down in the basement with covers and quilts during the winter, plastic up at windows inside upstairs - have done just about everything for energy conservation. Yes, I also have my bedrooms blocked off and the heat cut off to those rooms (although I just heard this morning that causes your furnace to work even harder!). I survive - I even have a heating pad in my lap to keep my hands warm watching tv! It's crazy! Actually at this point I think I would suffocate if it were 72 degrees in here. I do put a space hearter in my bedroom at night which shuts off and on as needed.

@hoosieroriginal That's right.......I had forgotten that you have an A-frame. I know those are hard to heat, for obvious reasons. Too bad you can't just hang around up there at the peak where the heat goes. I used to house sit for some friends who have a beautiful A-frame. It has lots of windows too (plus that whole one side is windows). It must cost them a fortune to heat it, but they are quite wealthy. I'm sure it's very beautiful living in your home in the spring and summer!

Mine was $200, and I keep my house at 70. However, December and January in the PNW had long stretches of temps in the 20's and sometimes teens. I think my furnace was running non stop. Hopefully, now that we are back in the high 40's, I hope to gain ground and not have a high bill next month. That was just my gas bill. My electric is still to arrive.

@2blonde - It is a beautiful home - the loft is my extra bedroom for guests - I only have a full sized antique bed up there - but I love to lie up there when there are storms and look out through the large window in my living room to see the lightning. Just wish it were warmer in the winter!

@Spinach2 My bill, also for gas and electricity, was just a few dollars more than yours, and my only outdoor lights were three strings of battery operated lights.
I think there was just increased use of indoor lights and heat. Also, when guests are here, more power is used, more laundry is done, etc.
Your house looked so pretty!

@hoosieroriginal Yours sounds a lot like the one I used to house sit.......and they actually used to pay me to do it! The upstairs loft was their master, and I used to sleep in their king sized bed. The house is on top of a hill in a completely wooded area with a hot tub on the back deck (bathing suit optional). Sometimes I would sit in the winter while they were snowmobiling in NY State. It was a real picnic trying to get up their winding driveway in the snow, but I was much younger and fearless in those days!
