Obviously, we overdid on the Xmas lights and the weather wa pretty cold so the heat was up!
Wow, your home doesn't seem that large in the pic with an average amount of Christmas lights.... Never had an energy bill that large and I live in s.Ca where it's hot most of the year and we use AC a lot!

We're just the opposite ..... in So Cal, summer is the high electric bill season due to the air conditioning on so much. Winter months are quite low, since we rarely need the heat.

That's why I don't turn my outdoor lights on until Dec.15

@magicmoodz wrote:My last electric bill was $66 and my gas bill was $.13--yes that's right, 13 CENTS. Well, actually the bill was $13 and change with a $13 and change credit resulting in a $.13 bill.
Granted having recently moved to a condo, I pay HOAs, but with reduced home owners insurance, car insurance, property taxes and those crazy low utilities (and not having to pay for water, sewer and garbage), I think I am coming out ahead!
@magicmoodz Just a heads up. You mention not paying home owners insurance. I've lived in a condo for 25 years, and you DO need homeowners insurance. If the place burns down (God forbid), the association will only cover the outside shell of your condo. The inner walls and all your possessions are not covered. There is actually special insurance for condo owners.

My house is all electric- bill for Dec was $166 and my house didn't get any warmer than 56 degrees! Now I'm bundling up even more, turning heat off (luckily it has been a little warmer this month) and trying to stay warm. I can't afford anything around that price again. I worry about other seniors having problems keeping warm. It's not fun when you are on a set budget.

56 is cold-can you check with your utility co to see if they have any programs that discount service for seniors? Some utility companies also offer extended payment schedules for seniors when bills get higher than what's in the budget.
I would freeze at 56 degrees.

@JeanLouiseFinch wrote:We have always done a budget plan with both our gas and electric companies. We pay a set amount every month. The amount is based on the prior year's usage. One time a year there's an "even up" month where you pay the difference, if you happen to go over or they will give you a credit if you overpaid. We've never had to deal with surprises like this.
@JeanLouiseFinch, we are on budget billing with our gas and electric company too, sure makes sense.

@hoosieroriginal OMG I literally would also freeze at 56 degrees. I keep my all electric condo at 72, and I'm still wearing North Face jackets and flannel pants around the house all the time! (I'm pretty skinny, though.) Can you maybe block off any rooms you aren't using, like an extra bedroom?

got my electric bill today, it was sky high too, and I had no xmas lights inside or outside. Just plain cold and nothing else.
Running heat dishes to keep the use of propane down. It is darned if you do and darned if you don't. one way or another you will have to pay.
