@Shanus wrote:@stevieb Interesting to me, they started the show all dressed in evening gowns, but seated. Huh?
@Shanus I didn't see the beginning. That must have been their nod to gowns, along with the two finalists appearing in gowns for the 'crowning moment'. I did find it very odd that all the women were clustered backstage to see if they were called out. SIlly, really. And I noted, during the times I checked in, there were no big production numbers as in days gone by. From what I saw it really was pretty morose for something that was supposed to pass as entertainment.

I think they should make it more of a quiz show. That would be more interesting to watch.

Or they could make it a Project Runway type competition show. Each contestant sets up a project to attempt to help America/Americans in some way. Actually make the world a better place--like they like to talk about in the interviews. That's what they all say they want to do if they win.
Put lots of rules and standards to make it fair. Set requirements for impact and scope etc. And then the project that exceeds the standards the best wins, and the creator is named Miss or Ms. Or Mrs. America (as appropriate) and recieves lots of other great stuff and opportunities.

I think the new Miss America format stinks. It is boring. Now we are seeing the interviews that they normally perform previous to the actual show. I enjoyed the evening gowns because it showed the taste level of the contestant. Ratings fell dramatically. Since they are trying to change the format so drastically how come it's not "Ms. America?"

This competition has had its ups and downs. I recall for a few years it was either not broadcast at all or was shown on a more remote cable channel. My take is they're pretty much sealing their own fate with this year's format and in trying so desperately to distance themselves from anything related to appearance. In trying to be so current, so relevant and yes, so 'politically correct'... they'll probably lose whatever audience they still had. It was also reported this was the first year they'd moved away from the usual site in Atlantic City, but I believe it was moved before and at least one year it seems it was broadcast from Vegas.
This and the other remaining pageants (competitions... whatever...) should probably simply face up to the reality that they aren't going to be all things to all people and that whatever audience they can still garner is not tuning in to see a bunch of young women wax poetic about the subject of their choosing. They probably also need to accept the reality that there will be a sizable contingent that have heartburn with the notion of a pageant and stop trying to reinvent themselves to assuage concerns their critics might have. Like any other competition or form of entertainment, they'll never capture everyone's approval and in trying to do so they'll turn everybody off.
