From what I read, nether the new MIss America competition 'formula' nor the show was a hit, though the winner seems popular. From what I did see, it was like they were trying too hard to distance themselves from being a 'pageant' and in the process presented pretty abysmal TV. It was just boring. As noted elsewhere, it's fine that they deleted the swimsuit competition, but at the end of the day, they still put a crown on the winner's head and so elements related to appearance, poise and so on, that were and remain relevant should be acknowledged, along with the social relevance that they tended to push down the audience's throat. There is absolutely nothing wrong with young women being seen in evening wear, even if they aren't judged on it. It also seemed odd to some viewers that there were only three judges and that the judges were active participants in the show. The MC's, were largely superfluous. One gathers this was an experiment with a new format and most indications are it didn't work all that well.

@Annabellethecat66 I think Miss VA. She added chemicals to hydrogen peroxide and three separate beakers "exploded" into billows of bubble gum colored foam that flowed onto the floor. Talent?

@patbz wrote:@Shanus: I think the best candidate son (especially with the revised "Miss America 2.0" . The winning candidate was beautiful and articulate and I loved her science presentation (better than baton twirling and the novice jazz dancer). There was a large variety of ethnicities but still plenty of blondes! A number of contestants wouldn't have been considered beauties when I was in my twenties but they were all cute.
@patbz I liked the runner up...tall, short dark hair who did a great job singing opera.

@suzyQ3 Now that they've eliminated the poufy gowns and bikinis and concentrated on education, poise, thinking fast on your feet, the show was OK. No Emmy winner, for sure. It wasn't even advertised very much...I just happened to catch it. I was interested to see what had changed from the Miss America shows I remembered growing up.

@stevieb Interesting to me, they started the show all dressed in evening gowns, but seated. Huh?

So, an science experiment is a talent. Like baton twirling or clog dancing...LOL My daughter has PhD in biochemistry, I'll have to tell her she's right on par with a baton twirler when it comes to education and intelligence. Maybe she can audition for AGT! Her talent can be the text books she has authored her her lectures...LOL It really is time to put the Miss America pageant out of it's misery. It's time is over, it deserves a peaceful death.

I assume they were pretending that bodies didn't matter. But I bet there were no size 12's or 14's sitting down in evening gowns in the pageant....that wasn't about women's bodies...LOL
@chrystaltree Yes, there were several more plus sized contestants in evening gowns. However the size tag was not visible.

We stumbled on to the show and watched. Amazing that they were all so smart and educated and had no idea that was the new criteria. We both enjoyed it very much but thought the winner was so wound up and hyper. Her talent was not the best but any and all were winners.
