Never. I'm glad I was born when I was so that we could have things like electricity, hot water when we want it, the internet and modern medicine.
I have several skills that would have fit a couple of hundred years ago, including fishing, chopping wood, setting up a shelter, spinning yarn, etc. I'd rather not have to do all that.
Plus, I like people. For the most part, it seems to me those who go off the gird aren't people persons, and a lot of them are into conspiracy theories, which I am not, thank goodness.

The sales of underground bunkers have risen lately.

Hi @tansy ![]()
I'm not surprised. Biting my tongue...

I don't care who does what, as long as I don't have to

No way, no how.
Being without power for 10 days after Sandy confirmed that.

@Noel7, I think you are right. I think a lot of the folks who do this don't like to be around people. On one of the shows, they said there are more wild animals than humans in the area, and showed a grizzly bear.

I know those who have talked about what this means (it's been a popular subject especially with the "survival" shows on cable) and I believe that living off the grid and being self sufficient are often (or can be) two different things.
Living off the grid in my circle means not being traceable by the government; no CC, no id, no database, nothing. Is that possible in todays' world? Depends on your skill set but for 99% of us, no.
Being self sufficient equals being able to survive off the land (again, in my circle). Can you hunt? Can you skin your kill? Can you butcher it and preserve it? Can you find and build shelter? Find/create a water source? Know and provide first aid (including the setting of broken limbs, dealing with burns, other serious wounds)? Do you know how to farm? How to tell the signs of the weather as to what's to come? If no, you're really not self sufficient.
There are those who are making a TON of money from people "prepping" for the fall of civilization but what if you had to leave your stash? Would you live or die?
In the end, it comes down to your own definition of what it means; the former? Not unless we lost the use of all computers in the world (or was with someone who has some excellent covert skills). The latter? Yes, thanks to my Daddy and the men I chose to have in my life.

I could never do it and have absolutely no desire to live that way. No appeal in the least.

Good grief, NO! I get nervous when I have to leave the city to go to the suburbs!
