I took driver's ed in school and drove with my dad. 70s

I took my driving test in a standard car. We never had an automatic, just 3 speed on the column. ( Hope I'm saying it correctly from memory).

@Jo1313    This thread is a regular trip down memory lane.  The car my mom bought after the Studebaker was a Ford Maverick in a pretty dark metallic green.  It seemed so luxurious after the ole Studebaker haha.

@shoesnbags

 You were blessed with a wonderful mom. It's not the extravagant gifts or holidays, remembered, but the small everyday things.

I took driver education in high school, but my loving mother taught me to drive a stick shift so I could drive our VW bug.  She was so patient with me.  I still remember getting so frustrated starting off at stop signs on hills.

My DH is a retired high school principal and teaches driver ed (behind the wheel) as his retirement job.  Like they said on NCIS, "I face death everyday."  He's had a only a couple of close calls.  He does have a brake on his side of the vehicle.  It's a great job because he always loved working with high school kids.  In our state you have to have driver ed to get your license at 16, otherwise you have to wait until 18.

Mostly my Mom and Dad.  I did have drivers education in high school  There was a small driving course in the back of the school.  Once completed, had to drive around town with instructor, who was a teacher at the high school.  My instructor happened to be my chemistry teacher.  We drove around all day doing his errands.  It was fun.  He was nice.

Re: Learning to Drive

[ Edited ]

After a few harrowing outings with my mother and her VW bug (stick), she suggested I might want to get lessons.

My instructor was a nervous woman named Penny who closed her eyes most of the time and held on for dear life.

She was amazed I passed the road test the first time (so was I)...Smiley LOL

Driver training was not offered at my high school (all girls parochial) so I took a summer school class at a nearby public school after I graduated. I enjoyed learning and adapted quickly.

I still remember the day I went to the DMV for my behind the wheel road test. I was really excited and completed the exam with a score of 97. The examiner dinged me for not pulling up to a limit line at a stop sign as far as he thought I should have. That was 55 yrs ago.

Re: Learning to Drive

My Summer Driver's Ed. Instructor was my former 5th grade teacher plus I was the only one stuck with a boy learning to drive. Embarrassing. The kids that lived on farms did well with all the practice driving on their land.

My Father had no patience and had a neighbor  work with me who was a Highway Patrol Officer taught me to parallel park. My Dad yelled on the way to the Driver's test to hurry up not to be late.  Affected my score ,but I passed.Teaching me to drive a stick shift was another yelling and swearing session. He finally settled down and I did fine.

My parents didn't give me the car to drive alone right away after getting my licence.. My Dad used to say later on I was a good driver.
