@Desertdi   You & I had the same father!

Only mine had me drive from Pa to Va on Rt 13 & I-95 while he instructed screaming & hollering from the passenger seat.

I believe at that time I had my first "when I have kids.........." thought.

EDIT:  Changed seats.

Around here some call turn signals blinkers, I've never heard them called which-ways, but I like it and may make it my own.

Officially or off the record?  My dad had me behind the wheel early on.  I remember as a little kid sitting on his lap and driving with him.  As a teen, he had me out on the road before I had my learner's permit.  He definitely pushed boundaries at times. LOL.  Officially, in high school, part of the curriculum was to take the "book" part. I did my "behind the wheel" instruction as a summer school class between freshman and sophomore year.  Parallel parking between two vehicles was one of the best things I learned.  Once you know the trick, you know. DH still says that's one thing I'm better at.

I learned the basics and one Sunday when we were visiting my grandparents, my mom said I could drive the family car around the next-door empty lot for the post office.

Her rule was I could maneuver and practice parking and whatnot, but I couldn't exceed ten miles per hour.

It worked.  I got a lot of experience driving in "slow motion".

I graduated high school in 1969.

The Athletic Director taught Driver's Edcation, in a real car.  I remember being in the car with three other boys, who all drove before.  I never did.  Many days we would go to the local bank with the money from a basketball game admissions from the night before.  I lived in an area with numerous traffic circles, which my Mom did not like.

My first behind the wheel experience was at a local park.  I finally got to the highways and circles.

My Mom took me for my test.  I never drove much for many years being close to good and safe public transportation.  The experience was ok.

I sent my DD to driving school in 2001 since my DH had passed and I did not want the responsibility!  He did teach the other two children to drive.

It doesn't seem years ago, more like just last week.

My sister allowed me to borrow her soft top red convertible. I took a wrong turn and pulled into a narrow lane meaning to turn around. It was difficult to see out the back window, so I put the top down. It wasn't top down season.

Thinking about my sister, I realize how kind she was to me. I didn't appreciate her then, I'm going to thank her now.

My mother let me drive her car in the railroad station parking lot when I was 15. there were never cars there on the weekends. One day a cop saw us and ordered us not to do that.  no ticket, just a warning.

In 9th grade, a Senior boy let the 9th grade girls drive his car, a big '70s land cruiser. When it was my turn, I was going too fast and  Iost control and went off the road barely missing a telephone pole!! He kept a bottle of Kaopectate in his glove box. Wonder why? heheh

Then at 16 I got my learner's permit so my Dad taught me the standard shift on his car, a VW bug. At first we would drive on the dirt roads over the railroad tracks.  I wasn't that swift with the shifting sequence and the car stalled right on the tracks at the crossing ( no gates)  Train was coming fast and honking.  I couldnt get into 1st gear and freaked out and jumped out of the car! Somehow my Dad scrambled over the seat and got the car off the tracks!

Then my parents sent me to Driver's Ed at my HS in the summer.  We drove big Ford sedans and the instructor had a brake pedal on his side.  One day I was driving on the highway with him and 3 other girls. I came up too fast on the car in front  and tapped the rear end while he floored the brake with both feet! Bumpers were dented and he and the other driver exchanged insurance papers. He wasn't really too upset because he passed me in the Driver Ed course.

Sorry I got so verbose...But I'm a safe driver now!

Re: Learning to Drive

[ Edited ]

I got my driver's license in my mid-twenties, didn't really need to drive at the time, my employment was next door to where we lived.  I had a good friend and a sister-in-law teach me to drive, both were very patient and gave me so much encouragement which I really appreciated.   Years later my boyfriend (hubby now) taught me how to drive a stick shift, I stuck to driving automatic😊.
