Re: LOL what does it mean to you?

I use it as Laugh out Loud, but it has several meanings.  Lots of Luck, Little old Lady, etc.  Of course, any of those could be a good meaning or a bad meaning depending on the conversation and the person using it and how they mean it.

Lucifer our lord is also used by Satanists.  Hard to tell unless you know the "rest of the story".

Laughing on line.  I've never given it a second thought.

Yep. That's what it's always been to me and to the majority of social media posters. For a long time, my neighbor thought it was lots of love, even though it never fit into the context of what she was reading. Quite often, I use it to laugh at myself. Other times I use it to show I got a chuckle at something from poster. If I have occasion to do this: LOLOLOLOLOL, it's meant to be a guffaw at how preposterous something said is.

only use it for LAUGHING OUT LOUD......usually for something funny, sometimes for something outrageous or totally out of line where i may also be shaking my head.

@Nancy Drew,  You qualified your question with this:   "...when someone gives their opinion opposite of yours...  I don’t mean when they post a kitten chasing yarn and it’s cute. LOL but when they are replying to your opinion... "

For that reason, although I agree that the general meaning is "laugh(ing) out loud," my answer is a little different.
If someone adds it to their opposing opinion, It's possible they want to compensate for the limitations of the written word and make it clear the post is not meant to be mean-spirited or confrontational.   I never use "lol" in any context, but I often use emoties to try and indicate the tone of my words.   It's like saying "them's not fightin' words!"😉
I suppose some people might use it in a sarcastic manner, yet the only way to know is to ask them.   I think we sometimes feel unintended barbs and have unnecessary dust-ups simply because our written words had no tone, facial expression, body language, and we were misinterpreted and didn't clear up the misunderstanding.
How do I take it?  I try to give the benefit of the doubt, or  if I'm confused by it I'll ask them.

@Nancy Drew I always take it as light hearted even if it was meant as sarcasm....just not a very aggressive sentiment in my mind.
