Frankly, the whole bucket of ice thing is so unnecessary. No connection to ALS at all.

Wouldn't it be ironic if the money raised provided research that showed that ice water on the head is somehow connected to the contracting or progression of ALS?

No connection except it's raised over $70 MILLION as compared to $2 million only donated last year. That's the connection. What an idiotic statement.

You are REALLY reaching...to take this great, generous fundraiser and turn it negative.

If you support a charity then write a check but don't brag about it.

From my understanding, correct me if I'm wrong and I'm sure someone will, the connection between ice water and AlS is that those afflicted have issues as to temperature.

Occasional rain..

My younger sister told me last night that the Ice bucket challenge was started in order to donate to ANY charity so I looked it up...This is what I found...

THIS comment from another article suits the O/P of thread...

The ice bucket challenge follows these antecedents but adds a new and troubling twist. Charities have always been comfortable using guilt as a motivator — children and puppies in danger seem to work especially well. But the challenge crosses a line. Those issuing challenges are not only telling others what cause to support but also saying that if they don’t, they must suffer a penalty. Threats to compel giving? It seems the opposite of what it really means to be charitable.

Thank you Melissa. I've been called heartless, insensitive, and other unflattering things for my views on this ice bucket challenge and it's nice to know there are others who feel the same.

Guilt as a motivator? There are plenty of posters on this board who would not feel guilt if it bit them on their behind.

DH and I have a budgeted amount for charity donations. We support through donations charities that have a personal meaning to us. we cannot possibly donate to all the charities that solicit money and so we pick and choose where our $$'s go. I will never allow myself to be badgered or ""challenged"" if that is the word to describe this sort of arm twisting into donating to a charity other than the ones I choose.

Who says Lisa hasn't done both? She supports a whole bunch of charities.
