It's a dollars and cents decision. If a store is consistently losing money, why would anyone think it's a good idea to keep it open?

Kohl's is only closing 18 locations. It's not "going under" and they are planning to launch new stores but smaller in scale.
If someone's imaginary husband was wearing $2,000 suits, why would they bother to go to Kohl's with a coupon to buy $5 tanks? LOLOLOL Surely Nordstrom's sells them too. ![]()

I still shop at Kohls but not as much as I used to. I have their charge card and when I get the 30% off coupon I go and get a few things that I need. I buy my underwear there and when I'm out of K cups, I'll get those there too. The quality of all the B&M stores that I've been in lately has gone down. My DH used to get his dress shirts as Macy's but now buys them online from a men's catalog when they're on sale and offer free shipping. He loves the shirts he gets from this company and pays about the same price he would at Macy's if they're running a good sale.

We lost two "underperforming" stores from my township in the last fifteen years and I've grown to hate that word. In both cases the stores were profitable and made more money than it cost to keep them operating. The one store was closed because a new Walmart Supercenter was proposed for the area and they didn't want to get into a price war with them. The Walmart Supercenter plan fell through, but by then the other store was alreay gone.
The second store wasn't happy with their lease and decided to build a new supercenter of their own north of the old location only to have the parent company run into financial difficulty and back out. We lost two, profitable stores that were making money for their parent company, but were labeled as "underperforming." I don't blame any company for closing down stores that are losing money, but when stores are profitable and covering their costs, they should be kept open. Several hundred jobs were lost, lots of tax revenue was lost, the parent companies lost income, and it's all just stupid.
It's one thing to close a store that's consistently losing money, but when you close stores that are making money, something's wrong. They'll label a store as "underperforming" as an excuse to close it, but much of the time that's just an excuse to close the store. I've come to hate the word "underperforming." If a store is losing money call it that, but closing stores that make money is just a stupid business practice.

I will only add that five years ago I lived at Kohls. Loved them around the corner with nice clothes at reasonable prices. And then the store credit card rally must have happened and it got frustrating to get out without a cashier absolutely berating you to sign up.
I don't do store cards. Never have. Never will. I slowed down because I didn't want to go through it every time. I stopped completely when they started making employees actually acost you while you were shopping and demanding to know if you had their card or not. I couldn't walk from one department to another without yet another employee coming towards me. Even lying and saying yes didn't save you. You needed to wear a sign to get them all to stay away. I don't enjoy shopping like that, at all.
The last straw was a man who decided to do it while I was in the intimate section. I'm sorry but I don't want to talk to a strange man while I'm holding undergarments I might wear. And he didn't stop at the card. Apparenty the new thing was do we have your email for our coupons? I walked out that day and never went back. Kohls completely drove away a great customer who now spends her clothes money elsewhere where she can shop in peace.

I have never experienced anyone coming up to me at any Kohl's to speak to me about anything. If I want a salesperson I have to hunt for one. I have never seen a Kohl's employee just roaming the aisles looking for customers to accost. The only time I have ever been asked if I had or wanted a Kohl's card is at checkout.
It is possible that this was an outside solicitation firm where the solicitors get paid for how many people they sign up. I have seen them in malls and other stores, but not in Kohl's.
