Remember the days when some did not have middle names and on official documents it was written for their middle name: "NMI"? (Meaning NO MIDDLE INITIAL.)

I used to call a guy "Neemi" when I found out he had NMI, and he loved the nickname -- of course we were flirting with one another at the time. (But that's a story for another day! ...Or not!)

Some parents choose the diminutive rather than the name from which it's derived. Betsy instead of Elizabeth, Bobby instead of Robert. I knew a girl named Dottie not Dorothy.  Seems short sighted to me.

We use family names mostly.  I used two unknown names yet popular for our younger son.

You can only name someone for a past relative for so long.

Either I wasn't taken with that relative or didn't like the name.

Now our youngest's son's names are family names.

Family names are nice as long as the forebear wasn't famous or exceptional. Otherwise it's unfairly bestowing a heavy burden and constant comparisons on the child.

Sorry but Maverick does not appeal to me for a human's given name. I once had a dog named Maverick.
