My daughter's name is Kristin Brandyn (Brandyn was the name of some woman on a game show that I saw when I was pregnant and I really liked it). A number of years ago Kristin said to me that she was glad that her first name wasn't Brandyn because people would call her Brandy and she knows she would have become a pole dancer. 😳 Now she's a mom of 3-Matthew, Tyler & Brooke. And my daughter-in-law is Gail--that's my name too, so my son has a mother and wife with the same first and last name. He had said he didn't know if he wanted to date her because it was really weird.. Their 2 girls are Amanda and Morgan. My husband and I are so blessed. 🥰

Hate cutsey spellings of names, (example), Nancee. She will be correcting people her whole life.
I like Thea, not Theadora. If a friend/family member called my kid Theadorable, it would be knock it off if you ever want to see her.
@CrazyKittyLvr2 My neighbor only call's her this privately in her own home. I have never heard her say it in public. It's just kind of a
grandma's pet name between the two of them.

@jubilant wrote:We became great-grandparents recently. Our grandson and wife were looking at western names. Frankly, we cringed at some of them. Well, the name they picked was Maverick. We were hoping for Hudson or Tanner but I think after they watched the new Tom Cruise movie that sealed it! Everyone calls him Mav now and, of course, it's their baby so we didn't say a word and it's growing on us. He turned himself over at one month so, let's face it....he is a little
"Maverick" and the name fits him! We are liking it more and more.
Our next door neighbor's grandaughter is Theodora and they call her "Theodorable" and sometimes "Dori". The parents don't mind and that is important. If they did they wouldn't do it.
When you think about it, some of our ancestors had names that sounded pretty weird to me. In fact, I think my given name is a little weird!
I like how the Maverick name ended up working well for him. I like 'Mav'.
I don't think I'd heard of Theodora before but it's interesting. I really like what they did with it. How cute is Theodorable! I also LOVE Dori!
I don't know any people w/little kids, so I haven't heard what names are popular these days. Turned out I didn't have a choice, but I never had kids at one point before I knew what had been done I always thought I'd like one boy or two boys. Nothing more. Nothing different.
But one name I always liked (for no apparent reason) is Jon Paul. It doesn't mean anything to me. I just like it and definitely with that spelling of Jon.
In the end things worked out as they should. I'd be terrible as a parent.

What I always wondered was how it is people can name somebody before they meet them. Does that seem odd only to me? I wouldn't be surprised. But I could never even name a dog/cat/bird/etc before meeting them.
@chickenbutt No, I don't think that seems odd. I had trouble deciding between Christina and Wendy for my first child so I waited till I saw her. She had a little "pixie" look about her so "Wendy" it was!!
I was the same way with my dogs, too!

@Daisy Sunflower LOL I went to school with a boy named Sterling Silva...His middle name was Lance. He went by his middle name.

Parents should realize that naming their child after a TV, movie character whose name they like will find the child with the same name as others in their classroom when they attend school.
I dislike Maverick, it's a descriptive word, and an embarrassment for a boy/man who is anything other than a Maverick.

Within a day of finding out she was going to be a grandmother, for the 1st time no less, my Mother was nagging me to name a girl Julie. Mom watched Days of Our Lives.
No, I'm not naming my kid after a soap opera actress. It isn't I dislike the name in general, but geez.
I had a girl, and her name is not Julie. I told my daughter that story when she was an adult. She thanked me.

I had to laugh at this because I decided on my daughter's name as a result of Days of Our Lives. LOL. I didn't name her after a character, but I choose the real life name of one of the actresses.

@occasionalrain That thought did run through my mind and DH's, too but if there are other Mavericks (and from what I hear it's a popular name around here now)...they can gang up on anyone making fun of them!
I'm not sure it's because of the movie, I just know they watched it and soon afterward we were hearing it. Everyone seems to be calling him Mav...even his mom and dad. We, being great-grandparents like that better. Today's kids don't consider it an unusual name like we do. Does that make us "old fogey's ...probably. Seriously though, I do understand how you feel. I can't say I didn't worry about that.

@Enufstuff wrote:Having worked in the public schools for 32 years, I have heard a lot of strange names. Various spellings of common names, made up names, names with apostrophes stuck in the middle,
girls given boys names, names that are not spelled phonetically
correct are some examples.
One girl was named Blue Rose. The best one, was a girl named
Shnell. Someone asked the girl if that was a family name. She replied, "Oh no, my Mother likes that perfume"! True story.
I have some grandchildren and great grandchildren with non traditional names. But, they are not names that they would be ridiculed for. My grand daughter's one year old is named Charlotte. Nice name, right? I just heard that they are calling her Charlie. That is too bad.
I think that some parents just want the most unique and unusual name. But, the poor child has to live with that .
It is too bad that some of these parents don't consider the teasing that their children may endure when they go to school. Kids are mean.
I feel the same way about strange names .... and Schnell? It hints that the mother didn't have much of an education. Embarrassing, to say the least.
Makes me wonder if there's been an increase in young people legally changing their names because they hated them. Sure you can always adopt a nickname, but the legal name sticks forever.
