I love coffee and tea!! I own a Keurig and no longer own a regular coffee maker. I buy K cups for coffee and love the ease, variety, etc. I previously couldn't imagine brewing a cup of tea in my Keurig since I'm a fanatic about using loose tea, steep times for different varieties, etc. I don't use tea bags at all and even make iced tea using loose tea. (We drink that all year too.)

But my son's GF often uses their Keurig and the little Solo cup refillable pod with loose tea. I was sure it had to taste terrible! So I tried it at home one day. I made my little cup of tea with loose tea in a regular infuser with hot water and made a refillable "K-cup" with the same loose tea. If I didn't know which was which I would not have been able to tell the difference. I was shocked. If you are that curious do your own taste test like I did. Just make sure the Keurig itself is clean from coffee build up inside that brew chamber. Some people don't clean that out very often and especiallyif they use the refillable "solo" type cups there can be a lot of loose coffee grounds in there that will give the tea a "coffee" flavor Smiley Wink

As to the idea that the K cups might contain instant tea be careful what kind of K cups you buy. I know that I tried a store brand of K cup coffee and it was DEFINITELY instant. Tasted terrible and when I removed the cup from the Keurig it was very light. Normally a K cup is heavier when you remove it because the grounds are now water-soaked. Feel free to peel the foil off and look at it too. That should tell you what is/was in there.

BTW, I will probably continue to brew tea the traditional way because I love the experience. But I no longer think other people who use the Keurig for tea are crazy. Smiley Wink

Have you Keurig ladies done a comparison on the cost of using regular coffee ( or the fancy ones you buy by the pound at the grocery store ) and using the K cups? Some of you are saying you throw away coffee, so it saves you money to use the K cups...but I think the cost of a pot of coffee you make yourself even in the fancier stuff, would still be much less than using the K cups. So, I am not sure you are saving anything at all, and perhaps even if you threw out 1/2 a pot of coffee, you still would be saving money. Just wondering.... I know the K cups are fun, and easy, but if you figure out how much it is actually costing you to buy them, you might be surprised.

Also, I know the K cups cost less than buying coffee out, but comparing to how much you spend making your own ( so simple and fast to do ) it does cost you more. We make a full 10 cup pot in 8 minutes. You can make less if you want. I think sometimes we don't really add up the cost over a year very often to see how much the added cost really is. Over time, it can be quite significant. Just a thought....

No, I have not done a comparison, nor do I intend to. I don't care what a cup of coffee costs at my house. And guess what, where are even more expensive ways to make coffee than the Keurig. FOR WHATEVER reason, some people aren't worried about the cost of a cup of coffee at home. It's a cup of coffee or tea. I mean really how much of it do you consume? If it is that much, maybe this discussion should be about how much coffee is good for you.

Not sure why anybody does anything. I don't drink coffee or tea, but bought the Keurig because it was a neat gadget. My hubby wanted nothing to do with it until one day he was in a hurry. Now he is hooked and I have found one brand called Grove Square on Amazon that provides really sweet flavored coffee that I top with whipped cream. Love it and it is like having a dessert. No real coffee taste. As for the tea, hubby uses tea bags and used hot water choice. And he found a brand of coffee he likes, I think Folgers morning blend.

It does seem rather silly to me also. I could see if they came out with a little pod to make a chai tea latte, but even then...I have the chai syrup and creamer at home to make my own.

I once owned a Mrs. Tea. The tea did not come out hot enough. I called the company and asked if the temperature could be adjusted. They said, "No," because their legal department did not want issues with people getting burned. So, I would take my tea from Mrs. Tea and put it in the microwave to heat it up. Finally, I just gave the thing away.

Even after living in England for 5 years, I still can't brew a decent cuppa! The absolute best tea is the Republic of Tea k-cups. They look like odd little silk pods or something, but they are amazing in my Keurig.

There is a Chai Tea K cup. You brew it and add your own dairy.

I still cannot get over the fact that people feel the need to "degrade" others about the choices they make, the money they spend etc. Last week I read a thread about "those women who buy expensive handbags". I can't remember exactly the words the OP called "those women" but she said awful things about them, like they were the worst scum of the earth because they want(can) to spend $$$ on purses.

This is the same thing. If you want to steep your own tea because YOU feel it is better then by all means STEEP YOUR OWN TEA!! If you want to brew your own coffee in a coffee pot or percolator then do it.

Please people, stop telling us how much we are spending on items that you do not want or like.

I have brewed my coffee everyday for years (except on days I worked then I spent $$ at a drive through). I refused to get a Keurig when my coworker bragged on how much she loved hers. Finally, last month I caved and got one. My hubby and I LOVE it! I do not waste coffee, I do not have coffee that starts getting too hot or strong because it has sat in the carafe over a hot plate for a half hour or more. I have a fresh cup every time in less than 30 seconds. When I have company I can offer everyone something they like instead of saying "oh, I only have decaf, or I only have hazelnut coffee..." And if I want to use my own ground coffee I can. If I want to spend "X Amount" on K cups I WILL BECAUSE I CAN!!! Also you can GOOGLE how to recycle the plastic K cups. They can be opened and used to plant starter plants, herbs etc. Or go throw them in a recycle container like you would plastic milk containers, cans etc...But then, you wouldn't have a complaining thread to post would you??

Just like the lady judging women who CAN buy expensive bags, I say stop judging Keurig owners. No one is trying to force you to use one. Go on steeping your own dang tea and leave us alone.

I love the Keurig for coffee. I don't drink coffee, but DH does. We have several kinds, and guests love to pick out what they like. I like the dark hot chocolate one in the winter.

I did not tell anyone what to do, and really don't care what you all do. However, when it is said that something is cheaper, and it definitely is not, that is why I wrote what I did. To each his own. Let's just tell the truth and not get so hostile when someone makes a remark. We are all entitled to our opinions, but we do need to learn to be kind or at least polite to one another while doing that.
