I am a retired software engineer.. in the Bell System. I wrote the first E911 software that looks up your address based on your phone number and sends the address to the dispatcher when you call E911. Installed our first system in Florida, then California and Minnesota.

While in college, I worked retail at Macy's. After college graduation, I worked 5 years as office manager for a local, non-profit organization while taking college classes.
Career change to higher education, I taught business courses for 4 years then transferred to student development. Qualified for early retirement incentive in 2012. An education perk is being able to retire, with pension, in your 50s. Post retirement staus is working at a college 4 days a week with different retirement system. I still have some steam left before I retire again; knock on wood. Academic studies include Sociology, Business, Psychology, Conflict Management and Dispute Resolution.

Wow!! This is so awesome reading about everyone's career choice(s)!! I appreciate everyone who has offered advice/encouragement with regards to my schooling. I am definitely excited and determined to make something of myself and most importantly to try to make enough $$ to actually be able to provide for myself and my daughter. As I've previously stated we live with my dad so some of the expenses are shared, therefore I'm not having to pay ALL the bills by myself. I do pay a good majority, but it's still not every bill as my dad does his part as much as he can, (He's on disability---retired firefighter, he was hurt on the job and was forced to retire) He doesn't get very much disability, but it's better than nothing at all!
When I was younger I made a lot of bad choices and unfortunately now that I'm almost 40 I'm paying for them. I know all I can do is learn/grow from the mistakes I made and that is what I"m trying to do!
Thanks again to everyone who shared their profession/career....I think it's super neat to see just how different everyone is :-) We've definitely got a bunch of talented/smart cookies here!! ![]()

Congrats to your daughter. Glad she enjoys her new job. Tell her to stick with it. It can be difficult in the beginning, but it's true, it really does get better in time. It's more of a lifestyle than a job......beats 9-5 lol

This thread is so interesting.
After college I worked as an RN in hospitals for 40 years. Have now been retired for almost 7 years. Retirement is the best reward for hard work.
All of you who posted here should be very proud.

Actually, you are in a better position than many kids.
You have been around the block a couple of times and by now you know what you DO NOT like. Wonderful information.
When I was in undergrad, all the vets were coming back from Vietnam and making As. I was dating one who was a math major and complained how hard calculus was. He just told me to study. A revelation!!
Years went by and I went to grad school and I was shocked how wet behind the ears kids are. One almost passed out when she saw the "letter" I wrote to the IRS in tax law. Shot at dawn shocked. I told her that is way to write a letter. Dumb kids.
You will do fine.

You are still young & very much have the drive to write your own story! Like so many others have said, do your research & pursue a careeer that you love & in return doesn't feel like a "job"
A job shouldn't be something you dread going to, instead it should be someplace that is rewarding & you look forward in going to
.
Once again, much good luck in pursuing your dream 😊
