So, I am just curious as to what everyone's profession/job is? If you're retired, what was your profession/job?

I work full time for an answering service (midnight shift) I've been here about 6 years. I've worked different types of jobs over the years, mostly office related or clerical.

I wish I'd of went to college, but unfortunately I had a baby at the age of 17 and then twins when I was 22 and it just never was in my cards. I am now 39 and have decided to go back to school (for what yet I don't know...lol) and I'm currently in 2 classes right now. Psychology & History. I figure you're never too old ya know?

Anyways, it just got me to thinking what everyone else does/did.

Re: Just curious...Occupation?

[ Edited ]

My last position for 15 years was with Warner Bros Studios in Burbank, CA as a manager for two of their privately owned buildings off the studio lot.  I loved every minute of it and sadly I had to retire earlier than I planned, due to a failed back surgery, and I still miss it.

Prior to that position I manged a 14 story hi rise building in Sherman Oaks, CA for 2 years.

Prior to that, for 10 years I was the assistant to the owner and managed the office for his company that did limited partnerships and real estate investments.  That position was in Woodland Hills, CA.

All in all I loved each position that I held and if I had it to do over, that's what I would do.  No regrets.

I am a retired high end residential interior designer, speciaizing in Historic Preservation.  While I loved design -and still do- the most gratifying work I have ever done was that as a Peace Corps volunteer, which I did right after college graduation.  As it was for most of us returning volunteers, that work was life-changing.

Re: Just curious...Occupation?

Happy Thanksgiving 🦃

I never finished high school got a GED and worked at retail most of my life. I worked my way up to management at a few places and then I got burned out. Retail is a very hard job. I always thank the people working this time of year. They have a very hard job. Boy the stories I could tell you! 🤣🤣😢

I hired a young man before I left retail and his parents ran a before and after school program near me and gave me a opportunity to work for them. And I must say this was my most rewarding job. I retired 2 years ago and the kids who most are adults now remember me!

Re: Just curious...Occupation?

I worked for exactly one year as a bank teller when I got out of college.  To the day, 1 year.  I knew it was time to go when the VP told the tellers one day at a meeting "we don't pay you to think, we pay you to count money".  Different times in the mid 70's, but I knew that I wanted to be where my mind was valued more.  Buh bye.  See ya.

Then I took a new job and worked for the next 37 years in Financial Services (commercial lending).  Varying positions including Accounting Manager and Account Executive.

@BrandiDavis - my senior year of high school, and then summers in college,  I was a switchboard operator at an answering service (back in the mid 70's).  I loved that job.  Taught me so much about phone eitquette and taking messages quickly and accurately.  I was like Lily Tomlin on the switchboard.

I don't know how answering services work now, but we each had a board with 100 lines on it and 8 cords to plug into the lines.

Why is it, when I have a 50/50 guess at something, I'm always 100% wrong?

Re: Just curious...Occupation?

I, like you had a baby at 18, shortly after graduating high school. I married my high school sweetheart & fortunately was able to be a stay at mom for many years.  I never went to college & went to work for a major airline in my late 20's as a flight attendant.

I now have been there for 25 years (and still going strong) & still a very a happy flight attendant with 3 wonderful grand babies.  I got lucky & it was one of the best decisions I ever made.  But who knew in my 20's that it would set me up for the rest of my life & can still say that 90% of the time it doesn't even feel like a "job" and wouldn't trade a single thing! Good luck to you pursing your dream 😊

Re: Just curious...Occupation?

I worked as a physicians assistant for 20 plus years.  Became burned out.  Had several clerical jobs then was hired in a warehouse as a forklift operator.  Loved that job.  Retired from it and then took a parttime job as a cook in a bar.  That was a fun job.  Now I am retired completely.
