Manhattan here I come! Now I am scared

About the weather, lol,  as many of you know I have been planning a trip to New York. Sunday we leave for 5 days.  The weather changes everyday, and I am a little scared about the weather next week.  Anyone have the inside scoop.?   The weather report isnt always exactly true.

i expected it to be cold.  But wasnt prepared for snow. I am a California girl.  We have had rain, and cold weather here, 43  degrees and night even 33...so I have been pretending to practice for new york. I have tickets for Ellis Island Tuesday, but heard it may storm. Yikes.  There are always the shows, and museums

we g

had also planned Central Park tour, this must have been California thinkin.  We usually can wear flip flops in Dec, lol

@shoekitty   I heard Tavern on the Green restaurant in Central Park is very nice.  Maybe you can check out their menu online.

Re: Manhattan here I come! Now I am scared

@shoekitty   I'm a native New Yorker who moved to California in 1965 and lived there for forty years.  I loved CA, the weather is fantastic and I didn't miss the cold temperatures, ice and snow.  Manhattan, what a wonderful place it was, don't know what it is like now but the shows, museums, restaurants will always be the same.   Great food and the best pizza in the land.

Now lets get to the time of year you chose to visit.  With climate change who knows what the weather will be like anyplace you go, but winter is winter.  Oh, I know, it isn't officially winter yet but the temps and snow don't know that, they get there when they feel like it.  The only thing I can tell you is to check what you have planned to put in your suitcase.  Warm clothes, and more warm clothes.  Do you have room for a heavy jacket or coat?  You will need it.  How about a warm scarf for your head?  Oh, and gloves for your hands.   Warm socks for your feet and a pair of comfortable shoes or boots.

Now for all anyone knows the weather can be beautiful, not summer, but pleasantly comfortable.  You may have to play it by ear but there are lots of stores you can run into should you find yourself needing something

I remember before I moved to CA I visited there for a month in December, and when it was time to go back to NY it was 70 degrees in CA and upon arrival in NY it was 10 degrees.  My father picked me up at the airport and the first words out of my mouth were, " Where is the next plane going back to CA?"  Anyway, keep checking the long term forecast and hope for the best.  You will find so many places to see and things to do that I doubt you will notice the weather, unless they have 2 feet of snow.  Just kidding.  Have a wonderful trip and tell us all about it when you get back.

Re: Manhattan here I come! Now I am scared

I live 20 miles north of midtown Manhattan. Worked there for many years retired now. Weather is brutal right now but that will change soon to sunny but cold. Leave your high heels home bring weatherproof boots, walking shoes and warm socks. The streets will be dry but it's the curbs that will be the problem crossing the streets. Anything else you need will be easy to pick up since there are stores on every corner selling scarves, hats and gloves now. I suggest a cross body hand bag too. Free hands will be helpful.

Lots of terrific shows to see as always here. I just saw "To Kill a Mockingbird" and "Ain't too proud to Beg" recently. Both terrific and different. You will not be bored in NYC and 5 days will go fast. Good luck.

We who get snow, just use it as a prop to get us in the shopping mood for the season.  Just dress warmly, not CA warm though.  Check the Weather Channel out.  Have fun, I envy you that trip.  I'll never get to see it, but it would be great fun I imagine.

I assume you will be in Manhattan. If it does snow streets are cleared immediately. Just bring waterproof boots for the curbs. Bring a warm coat, gloves, and a small umbrella. Also a few sweaters as you are probably not used to the cold. New York in the winter is great. Don’t forget to see a Broadway show. Many are discounted this time of year. Anything you need is easily bought. Have fun!

@shoekitty  Unless there's a true blizzard, you will have very few problems.  I would suggest bringing/wearing waterproof shoes/boots.  Subways will be running regardless of the weather.

However, no matter the circumstances go to Ellis Island.  IMO, it is truly a memorable experience.  Also the Circle Line tour around Manhattan, highly recommend.  Also Radio City Music Hall.  Plenty of things to do regardless of the weather.

Do not be "scared" and have fun!!!!  NYC is a great place to be at Christmas time.

Re: Manhattan here I come! Now I am scared

I worked in NYC most of my professional life and commuted from NJ.   The City is very prompt with clean up and only under extreme conditions do things come to a standstill.  I personally love the cold and mild to moderate snowfall in December as it adds to the ambience.  NYC is wonderful during the holidays; don't worry & just enjoy it.

@shoekitty As long as you are warm & dry, you’ll be happy! So, dress in layers that you can add to or subtract from as the weather changes.

You’ve gotten great advice about buying things there. A crossbody bag & black clothing are my uniform when I visit NYC as I am looking to blend in & not look like a tourist.

Uniqlo is a good source for those out of season items not found in your stores & a fun store to shop. I would recommend the packable down coat, jacket or vest and heat tech t necks. Long underwear bottoms or tights with good socks and waterproof shoes/boots.

I hope you are able to do the Central Park tour. On the Columbus Circle corner, there is a Whole Foods in the Time Warner Center and at the Plaza Hotel there is an awesome food court to warm up & have a bite.  But, if you need an indoor substitute I really enjoyed the self guided (headsets) tour of Grand Central Station.

Have a great time! I’ll look forward to hearing about your trip.
