Re: Just curious...Occupation?

[ Edited ]

@Barbara in Virginia   After graduating from high school...I never went to college...I applied for the peace corps.  I was denied because I did not have a college degree.  I was so disappointed, I have no doubt that was a very rewarding time in your life.

I worked for a newspaper for many years, setting ads, selling ads, etc.  My dh and I are now self employed for 40+ years.

My last job I was an underwriter assistant for an insurance company. Hated the job and dreaded going in almost every day the last 5 years I was there. The people were very nosey, the company itself did not give raises or bonuses. What you started with was what you ended up with even 10 years later I got laid off after 9 years and couldn't be happier. I didn't return to work. Prior to that I worked in the printing department of another company and it was fun. The people were great the company was wonderful but unfortunately it was during the times of mergers and we got bought out and put out of business.

Re: Just curious...Occupation?

I worked for almost 52 years for the same company, a CPA firm.  I started as a stenographer, then when we got our first main frame computer, I moved into the computer dept.  Loved working with machines, and having to find ways to get the results you want (a computer is only as good as the stuff you feed into it).  Eventually ended up installing software, setting up the program and processing tax returns.  Just retired end of May and I enjoy not getting going in the mornings, however, with the upcoming tax season approaching, I've been asked to help part time.  I can set my own hours, so I think I'll help.

Re: Just curious...Occupation?

I spent the bulk of my career in financial and credit exposure risk management with a pharmaceutical manufacturer. After the 4th round of M&A, I moved to institutional investment management on a part time basis. I’ve been completely retired and loving it since I turned 50 a few years ago.

Re: Just curious...Occupation?

I'm a speech language pathologist. I worked for Easter Seals for 17 years seeing clients birth through death but most of my caseload consisted of feeding therapy alternative augmented communication and early intervention. From there I was  self employed. I did contracts in primarily preschool programs. For the past two years I have worked full time for a contracting agency in a school district where I do initial evaluations on preschool students to determine if they qualify for special education. I also have a very small caseload of students I treat.

Re: Just curious...Occupation?

After college I went to Europe and Asia as a Military Recreation Specialist with Army and USO.  Eventually I returned from overseas.  I continued in Recreation Admin for Marines and then worked for 25 years for Navy in China Lake (personnel, recruiting scientists/engineers and later helping military transition into civilian life.  I was never a Military member but worked along side them most of my career. I've been retired 13 years.
