Neighborhood parade at 9:30, burgers and watermelon at 1 p.m., nap, something light and ice cream for supper.  It's our 33d year without a miss for the parade!

Read.  May watch tv p.m., may not.  Hot tub if it isn't too hot in the late afternoon.

@Mom2Dogs Thanks so much about the baby!  We are very excited!!  My daughter also has a 2 1/2 year old so with the move & new baby she will have her hands full and I will probaby be over a lot to help out.

Organizing  and decluttering homes sounds like a great little business for you!. You can make some extra money and decide to be as busy or not as you choose.

I don't understand people who only worked, never had a family with no plans or thoughts about what they would do when they retired.  Do you think your friend might like an over 55 community with social activites?  She might find new friends and fun things to do.

I hope your DH is doing better soon.  I know what you mean about them having an old person's way of walking.  My DH is very stooped and his spine has gotten very curved which makes walking difficult, slow and him appear old.  He took a lot of drugs several years ago when he first got his autoimmune illness which helped with his symptoms initially but I think in the long run created more problems.

@haddon9 You don't understand people who never had a family?  What about people born to older people and all their family dies when they are in midde age?  They don't live where they grew up, don't live by family, and they have jobs that demand a lot and elderly parents and aunts and uncles to see after. . . etc. etc.

@Sooner That is not what I meant.  I apologize if it came off that way.  I meant to say that I don't understand people who have worked for many long years, never had a family but they know at some point that their working years will end and don't plan for it.

Surely one should plan for their future after work particularly if they do not have a family.

@haddon9 Oh, sorry I didn't understand what you were saying.  I thought it didn't sound like you. It's me taking it wrong--for which I should have realized what you were saying.  And the planning is critical whether you have a family or not.  Perhaps even more so if you do because the entanglements for them can be enormous and sometimes bankrupt them.

Re: July 4th plans?

[ Edited ]

NOPE....nada nothing.  Something has hit me this year regarding the once thought of holidays like the Fourth of July.

YES...I too have a dog that is so frightened by booms and loud bangs.

I downsized in November of '24 so this is my first summer in the small place.  Im in Naperville Illinois so Im not sure what the structure is for that....although perhaps a fireworks display somewhere in town...? Not sure.

I will turn 66 in October and something shifted.  I have lost the desire to be in crowds,

A few years ago, along a parade route in Highland Park ( Illinois where community gathered for the Fourth, a sniper decided to shoot and kill many participants and viewers.  That was brutal.

Look, I know life goes on so please spare me the lecture...I get it, but a shift has come in our nation.  I don't trust it and I am cautious.  Yesterday in Idaho hurt my heart.  I have children in LE and extended family that are FD. My celebratory just on empty.

Yes, as a kid I remember picnics at family homes with all the good stuff.  It was a time that was fun. It's a much different time.

BESIDES....it is hotter than Hades outside and the mosquitos are the size of horses.

No hot dog and potato salad can entice me LOL.

We have a big 4th of July parade in our town. So we go to the parade, my brother and sister in law live on the parade route, so they stake out a place for us all to sit and watch and they service refreshments-there is usually about 20-30 of us...

After the parade we have a cookout at the park, usually about 30 or so of us-have a good time, eating and playing games and just catching up!

Evening-Fireworks!!!!

Long long day, but fun! Glad the next day is saturday though...I am on vacation all next week as well, so looking forward to it......
