There's an inherent dignity and worth to honest work, whatever it may be.  Basic, entry level jobs are a great training ground for teens to start to experience the responsibilities, expectations and privileges of adulthood.

Societies benefit in countless ways from a culture that encourages an industrious citizenry.  So, while there have been negative forces pulling against these values, I think it's vital that we remain undaunted, and encourage a healthy respect for work, and the tangible and intangible rewards that it brings.

I'm actually hopeful that we can get back to a better place on that, societally.

So something like China's social credit system?

It's a competitive world out there and if a worker can find a better gig with better pay in a better environment, they need to go for it. Large employers proudly and loudly show zero loyalty and that is what they have earned in return. Lack of value and trust is a two way street.

If employers wanted dedicated high quality employees, they would need to go first by modeling that behavior.

Those of you who are retired, if you are complaining about help wanted signs, go ahead and apply at McDonalds. If you don't want to do that, maybe consider why. Is it a hard job that doesn't pay well enough for the time and work you would be required to do?

You have a better situation for yourself, being retired. So you aren't about to volunteer to do an unpleasant job. Workers are working from home and doing gig work and lots of other jobs that are better situations for themselves. Don't be a hater. Congratulate people who, just like you, have done better for themselves.

If you tried to become a barista at Starbucks, do you really think you could handle the pressure and chaos and remember all the drink orders properly--with a smile? Stay on your feet that long? I somehow doubt it. It's a hard job that is constantly unfairly belittled. We should show workers who are ESSENTIAL to our wellbeing some respect.
