She also showed support for cancer funding. Days before this all happened with Joan, she sent a basket of goodies to a 5K race in my former hometown. A race that was run for pediatric cancer (in the name of a little girl that died of cancer at Christmas 2013). Joan had sent the basket and made a video that she was sorry that she couldn't attend. (She had also posted a message to the little girl before she died last year). Joan was a wonderful person.

Thank you, Shorty2U, for sharing that memory. Over the years, I've read and heard many stories of Joan' s soft heart and true humanity toward individuals in crisis or need. So, in addition to the big-name charities and well-known causes, I think Joan reached out to people one-on-one, to touch them human to human, many times in her lifetime. She was tireless and generous with her time and money.

I was remembering tonight that Joans sister, Barbara Waxler, had passed away not that long ago. I did a quick Google and found that Barbara died in June of 2013, on the eve of Joans 80th birthday. Barbara was 82................ For those interested, I found this account of events surrounding Barbaras passing and Joans public statements at the time.
